That's all totally fair. Again, just agree to disagree on the quality/talent of Innaritu and Cuaron specifically.durdencommatyler wrote:Kubrick is maybe the best example for your case, I think. And there are some directors I love that I'm sure other people feel would fall into the category I'm putting Cuaron and Innaritu into, such as Kubrick, Fellini, and Refn, but even their stuff feels natural and earned to me.
I would lump Inarritu in that category, for sure. Cuaron, while I still LOVE what he does, is maybe the bridge between the two. He does get in his own way sometimes, but I think, on the balance, he finds the right choices.

It's fucking amazing, you should check it out. I think it's the purest representation of Polanski's style. The black comedy, the paranoia, the absurdity, the voyeurism, the psychological unease. It also helps that Polanski plays the protagonist himself. It's one of the greatest movies ever made, in my opinion (and it becomes pretty intense and profound when you consider what was going on in Polanski's personal life when he made it).durdencommatyler wrote:I have not.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Hey, durd, have you ever seen The Tenant?

Sold! I'll check it out as soon as I can. I've been wanting to watch more of his stuff. Seems like a solid place to start. That or The Piano, which I can't believe I still haven't seen.LoathedVermin72 wrote:It's fucking amazing, you should check it out. I think it's the purest representation of Polanski's style. The Pianist is great but Polanski’s style appropriately takes a bit of a step back because of the daunting material. Make no mistake: it’s still very much a Polanski movie, but…you get what I’m saying.durdencommatyler wrote:Sold! I'll check it out as soon as I can. I've been wanting to watch more of his stuff. Jesus, did I really write The Piano instead of The Pianist? Fuck Jesus with a garden hose on full blast, I'm sorry.LoathedVermin72 wrote:The Pianist is great but Polanski’s style appropriately takes a bit of a step back because of the daunting material. Haha, The Piano is one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen. Jane Campion is a strange one.

Totes. But not necessarily in a bad way. Did you watch Top of the Lake? I know you're not big on TV shows, but that one-shot series was fucking brilliant. And just as strange as you'd expect from Campion.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Haha, The Piano is one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen. Jane Campion is a strange one.

No, I haven't yet, but it's been in my Netflix queue forever. I gotta get on that soon.

It's really lovely. And a good example of how TV is working its way more toward the cinematic experience. But it's weird. And flawed. But overall, I found it haunting and something I know I'll revisit.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Oh yeah, I kind of like it. It's just really bizarre.durdencommatyler wrote:Totes. Re: Film: Birdman (2014)
Hey Vermin, do you write for The New Yorker under the name Richard Brody?
Mr. Brody did not like Birdman, and after our conversation yesterday, I imagine you'll have a similar point of view. Here's a brief snippet from his (your) review:
" ‘Birdman’ trades on facile, casual dichotomies of theatre versus cinema and art versus commerce. It’s a white elephant of a movie that conceals a mouse of timid wisdom, a mighty and churning machine of virtuosity that delivers a work of utterly familiar and unoriginal drama. Of such things, too, can Oscar buzz can be made."

Haha, no, but I like Richard Brody. He's one of only two critics worth reading, I'd say (the other being Armond White). We don't always see eye to eye, though.

Re: Film: Birdman (2014)
Brody's review is well written and thought out. He's coming from a biased and (I think) faulty a priori assumption. So I don't agree with some of what he says. But it's a good review, even if I disagree.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Haha, no, but I like Richard Brody. He's one of only two critics worth reading, I'd say (the other being Armond White).
