That's what initial reports said, but based on previous experience, I wouldn't be surprised if that number comes down.

3 locations that are all very close together - whether they are from 3 separate incidents is still unclear. From what I understand it started with a passenger getting out of a car and opening fire on a soldier at a war memorial, who then ran a short distance to the Parliament building where the original car/driver had stopped. It seems as though a suspect was gunned down by police inside Parliament. So one or more gunmen in the building? There were then later reports of gunfire at a nearby shopping centre, which is about a block from the original site where the soldier was shot.

It sounds like there was no shooting at the Rideau Centre now, and the soldier who was shot has apparently died. Horrible, horrible news.

Apparently the Ottawa guy once lived in Montreal - the driver was def a quebecer but both had become ISIS afficionados so I'm quite sure it had nothing to do with the french/anglo thing.

It must be remembered that a bit more than a year ago, some dude tried to shoot the then-newly-elected Quebec prime minister (the Parti Quebecois leader Pauline Marois, who was, incidentally, the first woman to hold this position here) but ended up killing a sound tech instead. His agenda was pretty clear - he was against francophones. Of course, that was not handled as a terrorism act. Federalist news outlets prefered to called the shooter "a troubled lover of the great Canada".

Harper did change Canada's role in world affairs, turning the traditionnally humanitarian role of the army into a completely biaised and belligerent organization. I don't mean to justify this week attacks but to see this as a surprise is pretty fucking naive.

I think that the three of them are religion motivated nutjobs but then, I think that most killers are somewhat nuts. The troubling details in these are the targets, hence the political recuperation that happens (or didn't in the case of Marois).
