I get frustrated when I watch co-ed softball players do that, let alone major league ball players. It's such a simple concept!BDB wrote:and if he wasn't turning around watching the ball as he rounded second. look at your 3rd base coach!!Chris_H_2 wrote:Perhaps not if he actually ran hard out of the box.Bammer wrote:Gordon would have been thrown out. If we're going to talk base-running mishaps, can we discuss sliding into first base?

It always seems pretty stupid unless the runner is trying to avoid a tag.Simple Torture wrote:If we're going to talk base-running mishaps, can we discuss sliding into first base?

If he went and was thrown out fairly easily we'd all be talking about how stupid he was for giving away the chance of having the tying run at third base.

That's right. And it would have been the last play in a Game 7 of a World Series, which would always be remembered.cutuphalfdead wrote:Chris_H_2 wrote:If Alex Gordon tries to score there, it would have gone down as one of the single greatest plays in World Series history, regardless of the outcome.

A close play at the plate to decide game 7 of the World Series would have been magical.Chris_H_2 wrote:That's right. Definitely. Although Gordon has limited wheels, it would've taken a pretty good throw to get him. Crawford was pretty deep with the relay. But, no one wants to be the last out of the losing team in a WS.numbers wrote:A close play at the plate to decide game 7 of the World Series would have been magical.Chris_H_2 wrote:That's right. Yeah, I never understood that...when you run, you're fast, the purpose of sliding is to slow down and stop quickly.philpritchard wrote:It always seems pretty stupid unless the runner is trying to avoid a tag.Simple Torture wrote:If we're going to talk base-running mishaps, can we discuss sliding into first base?
Plus all the injury opportunities from it... That's why come clubs have banned it in the minors.

Re: MLB
they way bumgarner was throwing they were better to take the chance sending him home. they had better odds with sending him than getting 2 hits off of him in a row.Chris_H_2 wrote:That's right. I would be really interested in knowing what kind of timing difference it makes, positive or negative. Like you said, the purpose of the slide is to come to a stop quickly to avoid overrunning the base, but it's also usually done to avoid the tag/make it harder for the fielder to get a clean tag down. Those things almost never come in to play at first base.Fuck You Jobu wrote:Yeah, I never understood that...when you run, you're fast, the purpose of sliding is to slow down and stop quickly.philpritchard wrote:It always seems pretty stupid unless the runner is trying to avoid a tag.Simple Torture wrote:If we're going to talk base-running mishaps, can we discuss sliding into first base?

I'm not sure on the stats, but if you think about it. you're going at a constant speed (perhaps slightly slowing) while running. Once you start diving, your legs are no longer pumping to keep you at that speed, but your leap does give you a bit of an acceleration boost. It's why they give you the option to run through the base so you can get there quicker.philpritchard wrote:I would be really interested in knowing what kind of timing difference it makes, positive or negative. Here's something from ESPN (so yeah) - it does agree with what I'm saying.
http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=10766501
I think the video is flawed, though, since he's not running 90 feet and they never time the entire run - just the run up to it picking an arbitrary final 10 feet.
I guess if you wait to dive until the very end you'll get there slightly quicker, but that leaves an ever greater chance of injury if you're exploding into the base.

I like this too. but everyone is saying he is the best manager in baseball. Is that really true?Chris_H_2 wrote:Joe Maddon a Cub!!!! Fuck yeah!!
I think if I had my pick, I think I would rather have Girardi - I mean at least he has won a WS or two.
