Detroit: Solid main set, great "Long Road" opener, and a nice mid-set run including "I Am Mine," "Army Reserve," "Insignificance," and "Garden." The performances of "Man of the Hour" from this tour are probably the best example of Ed as an "interpretive singer" that I've heard, in the sense that the liberties he takes with the melody seem to reflect an engagement with the musical potential of the song that goes deeper than just performance. It amazes me how effective he is going up an octave for that bridge -- he uses the same trick on "Present Tense" and it works to completely the opposite effect.

Things get a little flubby and characteristically syllable-excessive as the encore drags on (I think "Whipping" may be the most carelessly performed song across the course of their career), but this was the first version of "Kick Out the Jams" I heard from PJ, and I still think it rocks.

That show gets a bad rap because it's short, because the venue totally sucked, and because it follows the massive Mansfield show. But it's a really tight show...certainly tighter than many shows from the first 2/3 of the tour. They nail pretty much everything.

It's funny how different the experience of listening to a recording of a show can be to having witnessed it in person. I've repeatedly found performances that were widely reported as having been mind-blowing relatively underwhelming on recording and the shows derided as having been flat, dull or otherwise disappointing being a lot more enjoyable, band playing better, etc.

It's not as though I've escaped this either: I really didn't enjoy Adelaide this year in person but the bootleg reveals it as one of the stronger shows from that run. A few people chimed in about how poor the first Manchester show from 2012 was recently and I remember enjoying that bootleg a lot more than some of the more celebrated shows from later in the tour.

I was there too. They definitely didn't want to be there, but it was because of hassles with the venue, not a lack of a desire to perform. I think they turned in a fine performance. Perhaps the hassles provoked them to prove something.

I also enjoyed this show because it was the only show I attended where I could hear their sound system clearly, and I could actually enjoy it in real time.

I just gave the Cincy 2014 show a spin. I was there and the acoustics are horrible at US Bank Arena (Or I was just really drunk).The Pendulum/Nothingman/Of The Girl opening combo blew my mind. I noticed some very noticeable Stone fuck ups on Present Tense. I cannot describe just how truly awesome Love Boat Captain / Jumping Jack Flash was. Totally made me fall in love with that song. Jeffs bass playing really stood out. He just gets better with age.
