The army of the dead are actually in the books but aren't used to ensure victory, it's more about making them fulfil their oath.
Plus as big as the battle for minas tirith is, it really is just a pointless victory, they still don't know where frodo and the ring are, so they decide to try buy him more time by going and challenging Sauron himself at the black gate. In so doing, playing on Saurons fear that one of his enemies has taken the ring for himself, presumably Aragorn or Gandalf. And he doesn't consider at all that they would look to destroy it to be rid of him. The dead army would be probably pointless at that confrontation, being dead Sauron would probably have a way of using them or turning them For his own sides.

In the book and extended edition the mouth of Sauron comes forth. His ambassador. That scene is awesome in both book and film though they did make changes to it.

this power that the ring held seems specious at best. I still don't get why it is believed to have great power in the hands of anyone besides Sauron. Perhaps because we only see halflings wearing it, it never reaches its potential besides the whole shadow realm thing. I mean, does anyone even wear the rings of power after what happened to the men who wore them?

the ring was made by a corrupt being, its power is absolutely evil and corrupt and will corrupt anyone n contact with it

theres a part early in the story where Frodo offers it to Gandalf..freely.....had he taken it, Gandalf would also ruin the world, through coercion. And through the want to do do good but wanting to everyone to follow his will, he would be doing the same as Sauron, but it would be worse, because it would be making people follow his mind from a good place...and that would be worse...

the message being people should always be able to have the choice...this topic has endless debate behind it..

Galadriel doesnt take it, though she has the option, and is one of the oldest living people in all of Arda, Elrond doesnt take it, and he also has enough sense to not take it, despite his wife being captured and enslaved by it's maker and master, and Gandalf doesnt take it because it is forbidden for the five wizards to take arms or power in kind against that which they were sent to middle earth to fight..

see above..simply put, the more powerful the one who takes it is, the more it would corrupt and spoil their intent, no matter what it was

You need to bone up on your Tolkien. He came from a very very religious/black or white kind of viewpoint. About everything in fact. And didn't really know how to 'write' female characters at all, as an extension of that in a way.
