Anymore, I mostly just come here to take short breaks from trying to turn "Apply the principles of host-pathogen and pathogen-population interactions and knowledge of pathogen structure, genomics, life-cycle, transmission, natural history, and pathogenesis to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious disease" into a useful learning objective.

You guys, I'm really excited to get my copy of the Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition. In fact, you might even say the excitement is extending my Smaug.

Smaug was crippled by self aggrandizing, crushing weight of ego and self obsession...as for your extended edition, with luck it will be as nebulous, impotent and unexciting as the last.

I should probably mention that I already love An Unexpected Journey and the theatrical cut of The Desolation of Smaug. Peter Jackson Middle-earth movies can do no wrong, as far as I'm concerned.dimejinky99 wrote:Smaug was crippled by self aggrandizing, crushing weight of ego and self obsession...as for your extended edition, with luck it will be as nebulous, impotent and unexciting as the last.

I really liked parts on unexpected journey, but I do have complaints. I loved the theatrical cut of desolation. I'm with you in that I'm totally swept up in the world. I also think the dwarf/smaug running battle was very well done, which is not a popular opinion round these parts

I thought the dwarves/ Smaug sequence robbed the sense of threat or danger that Smaug's meant to have..
the whole sequence is almost slapstick..

Re: Film: The Hobbit : Battle of the five armies (December 2
I have a totally different take on it, obviously. While Smaug never killed the dwarves the whole 'big thing has trouble targeting little things' trope is nothing new. He still comes across as this immensely powerful thing the dwarves can't possibly hurt--the best they can do is scurry away from him. Even in the end when they try and drown him in the molten gold (which seemed appropriate--the symbolism of the dwarves relighting the forge/reclaiming their homeland and the greed being the downfall) he ends up shrugging it off.
And as far as Smaug's bestial rage, the enraged dragon protecting their horde is a pretty standard fantasy trope (probably due to the hobbit), and the whole idea of the lust for wealth and power corrupting people and diminishing them runs through both the Hobbit and LOTR. We see it happening to Thorin, to Thorin's grandfather, and to Smaug as well--the lust overpowering everything else. I like that we get both sides of Smaug--the clever schemer and then the force of nature. I think the whole sequence from top to bottom is very well done. The conversation with Smaug and Bilbo was gripping, and the extended chase was exhilarating in the theaters. I loved every second of it.

Be interesting to see what kind of screentime he gets in the final film. Bards son is up in the tower with the arrow. Just need to get Bard up there to take him out

It'll be hilarious if Smaug dies in the first ten minutes of the movie.
