I finally got around to watching the first episode of True Detective. Holy crap, what miserable, boring garbage.

Are you one of those "I hate tv" guys?

I would probably fall into that category for the most part, even though there are certainly a lot of TV shows I like. It just doesn't compare to movies for me. I was looking forward to TD, though, because I knew how cinematic it was supposed to be and I love Cary Joji Fukunaga's movies. Well, I will give it this much: it definitely feels cinematic. It feels like a movie. ...A really shitty movie. The writing is fucking abysmal.

He's not entirely wrong. A lot of the writing is hackneyed (not all, there are some genuinely lovely and fairly fresh moments). But really its a couple of wonderful performances that elevate the language. The plotting is obvious. And it's narrow and often unnecessarily (even accidentally?) misogynistic. The cinematography, direction, atmosphere, and of course, the performances from the two leading men, are what elevate the narrative. If this show didn't have this director, that cast, or HBO's money, it wouldn't be so widely regarded.

But it does have those things. And it does feel massive. And it is absolutely cinematic. AND it does get better. The first episode is nice but it's far from the pinnacle of the series. And the thing does run out of the steam it gathers by the final hour or so.

TD is far from being a piece of shit. Or miserable garbage for that matter. Boring is subjective. I happen to disagree. The show has some flaws but "boring" isn't one of them. But I think when if we start picking it apart and talking about it's best features, the writing is fairly low on the list.

Which reminds me. I'm stoked for new episodes of Always Sunny and Portlandia tomorrow. I think I might hold off on starting Boardwalk Empire until I catch up on work.
