TV: Bates Motel

The wife and I are watching this. It's good, not great, but I love Vera Farmiga and I'll probably hold on for a few more episodes in hopes it gets better. The kid that plays Norman is good as well and they are just now starting to dip into the creepy aspects of their mom/son relationship, which is pretty unsettling.

We have this recorded, haven't watched it yet. Looks decent from the previews.

You were able to sit through the Tim Burton version? Wow! You deserve some sort of prize for that.

I've enjoyed the first 2 episodes of this. Young Norman is well cast, as is mother.

I sat through it because of "Big Fish". I sat through it a second time because I was visiting someone for Christmas. The first viewing? It was OK, but not as good as Willy Wonka. Second viewing? Well, at least the kids enjoyed it.

Besides: It's not like I could say "The kid that plays Norman"? That's Arthur. Or "The kid that plays Norman"? That's Astro Boy.

The girl who plays the mother was on Craig Ferguson last night and it was a great segment. German is such a sexy language.

That's funny, Craig was on Leno the other night and she was on as well. (I watched Leno for Craig, before you ask)

I'm super excited about this show. Glad there's a thread about it, finally.

Of?

I am enjoying this show. Great casting. I have a feeling this is going to be REALLY fucked up. I figured something had to be up with the officer. No way in hell he would just help her out for just the vag.

Norman's hallucinations. The reality break down is key to Norman Bates. I wasn't sure how long they were going to skate around it. I want this show to last for a good long while. I love a slow burn. But I also don't want Norman to be "normal" for too long, either.

I love how each episode has revealed (exposed?) a new level of dysfunction between Norman and his Mother. The sexual tension is so creepy and well executed. But I was waiting for the first signs of delusion.

Also, the death of Norman's dad. They keep saying it was an accident. But I thought the first episode was vaguely implying that we're supposed to believe that Norma actually killed him. Is that too easy? Do we think Norman (not Norma) killed his dad? Could be a fun reveal down the road.

I was worried you were going to say "well that didnt take long for me to become completely uninterested"

I thought it was obvious that Norma killed her husband. I thought that was more than implied but I suppose you never know. I, too, am very much enjoying the slow decent into madness that is happening with Norman. That kid is doing an excellent job.

Nah, I'm all in right now. I hope the bet pays off. But this show is fascinating to me. Freddy Highmore and Vera Farmiga are both lights out. The supporting cast (at least the adults, so far) are performing well, also. I love Nestor Carbonell (the sheriff). He's always fun to watch.

I'm glad you thought Norma killed him too. Was hoping I wasn't making that up. But the longer it goes on the more I wonder if it was Norman. He's standing over his father's body when we meet him. He's shown the willingness to strike. Most importantly, in this last episode, some of the dialogue between Norman and Mother ("we can't let that happen again" or whatever), and the Deputy's question about Norman having killed the former owner, seem like subtle hints.

This show is good not great, but the kid that plays Norman is quirky as fuck. He's perfect for the part and I'll keep watching because of him.

I agree. I like the show okay but he's pretty good. Not only is there a vague Anthony Perkins resemblence he actually looks like he could pass for 17 (I know, he's a little older).
Recently re-watched Psycho. The first half hour is a little slow but once Marion is at the hotel it holds up really well. The tension in the shower scene and the big finale is still there. I'm sure the reveal at the end packed a punch in its day.

There's not a frame of that original film that I don't love.

Just caught up with this show. Pretty solid acting and I like the setting of this show. Not sure where its headed, but its enjoyable enough to keep watching.

Plus, its funny to see how dorky Norman has some kind of kavorka "the lure of the animal" with the ladies.
