I don't really like Yellow Ledbetter, and I pretty much despise Small Town. Skip 'em both every time they make their way through my shuffle.

Re: UNPOPULAR PEARL JAM OPINIONS
I never liked YLB (Hendrix wannabe/ripoff guitar spoils it for me), but I was a fan of Small Town when it first came out. Over the years, I've heard it so many times I'm done with it. It's a good song, but I'm to the point with a lot of PJ songs where I've had my lifetime fill. Small Town is a good song that I've heard so many times, I never need to hear it again. I suppose the sign of a great band is that once you've exhausted their most popular/renowned material, you still want to dig into the lesser-known tracks. PJ doesn't have many obscurities, but I suppose that's why I find myself drawn to the songs they haven't beaten into the ground in concert. I'm pretty much done with their big concert staples, which has comprised the core of their setlist a for as long as I can remember. It's genuinely surprising to me that they aren't sick of playing songs like Black, Alive, Even Flow, RITFW, and so on. And they don't seem to be, so more power to 'em.

Funny how the same thing could be said about the song writing abilities of Matt, Jeff and to a lesser degree Stone.ABNorman wrote:More like some people hideously overrate it. Re: UNPOPULAR PEARL JAM OPINIONS
And as far as Smaug's bestial rage, the enraged dragon protecting their horde is a pretty standard fantasy trope (probably due to the hobbit), and the whole idea of the lust for wealth and power corrupting people and diminishing them runs through both the Hobbit and LOTR. We see it happening to Thorin, to Thorin's grandfather, and to Smaug as well--the lust overpowering everything else. I like that we get both sides of Smaug--the clever schemer and then the force of nature. I think the whole sequence from top to bottom is very well done. The conversation with Smaug and Bilbo was gripping, and the extended chase was exhilarating in the theaters. I loved every second of it.

If a (Pearl Jam) song needs good headphones to be enjoyed than said song isn't all that strong.

I'm assuming you're referring to the post I made in the Yield thread. However, you'll notice I never said the songs "need good headphones" to be enjoyed. Just that they benefit from them.Mine wrote:If a (Pearl Jam) song needs good headphones to be enjoyed than said song isn't all that strong.

If a headphone listen with quality phones doesn't improve upon what you hear with speakers, then the production is absolute garbage.

I know what you meant. It just reminded me that "have you tried to listen to it with good headphones" is a common response to people who don't like certain songs.theplatypus wrote:I'm assuming you're referring to the post I made in the Yield thread. I'm not trying to diminish the benefits great headphones provide. It's actually my preferred way of listening music.
Generally i believe that the main benefit great headphones( coupled with a properly mastered source) provide, is the ability to listen to music one likes to begin with in the best way possible.
