The Terminator has to be one of the most "watchable" movies ever made. The pacing is just perfect. The tension never lets up. The kinda love story between Sarah and Kyle is poignant without being super cheesy. Arnold is great because he's playing a cyborg and his voice and robotic acting totally works. The score is fucking awesome, without being overwhelming. The dialog is perfect for this kind of movie, it's simple and never really tries too hard. I'd like to watch it right now.
theres no doubt terminator is number 1 and aliens a close second and robocopp way way down the list. but i was 12 in 1985 so i think that plays a big part. everyone wanted to be kyle reese. he was awesome and extremely cool. but bro, not a big fan of escape from new york. i wasnt into pretty boy action heroes like captain ron.

these were the most important posters in my room. i never even heard an iron maiden song or even liked them but the fuzzy black light poster was bad ass.

Robocop is definitely satire. I just don't find it particularly effective satire. But I'm in the minority. Most of friends love the hell out of it. Just never resonated with me. Maybe the violence gets in the way? Or maybe it's just too absurd on some level? Not sure. But that's why I keep going back to it again and again. I want to understand why I dislike it when so many people that I respect (and share common interests with) love it.

Alien is definitely a better film than Terminator. And Predator for that matter. To me Alien, though clearly a genre film, is good enough to surmount its genre. It's a great movie, not just a great "sci-fi" movie. Predator, for me, is a great "action" movie, but I don't think it's a great movie. It's great in the context of it's genre, not in general. It's a fun movie, sure. But I wouldn't rank it among the top 300 or 400 movies ever made.

I think Terminator splits the difference between Alien and Predator.
Oh yeah Alien is definately better than all these, but i was talking about the sequel, which is just a great action movie.. Unfortunately, I saw Aliens before Alien, so it ruined a lot of it for me, but now I can appreciate it even without the suprise factor.

Terminator can be a little tough to watch now because of the stop motion effects and bad make up. its not that big a deal though. its still fun. Aliens has a couple of man in suit moments, but its not too noticeable.
Ah. I see. My mistake.

I think Terminator is a better movie than Aliens. But, to be fair, it's been a while since I've seen either of them. I should watch them both again and reevaluate. I think Aliens is pretty overrated. I think I like Predator better as well.

I watched The Road (2009) last night and this morning because I'll be watching it with my student next week (we read the novel over the past two weeks). It was fine, I guess, with some really cool moods set with the color pallet changes between the "present day" and flashbacks/dreams. But overall, I think the book is just more powerful.

watched Scorcese's After Hours for the first time yesterday and found it hugely entertaining and the Cheech and Chong cameos were hilariously surreal. found out afterwards that the dialogue with the doorman at the Berlin club was culled from Kafka's The Trial - gotta read that book again.

The whole movie has strong Kafkan undertones. It's a great film.

I didn't think it was that bad. There is a scene involving a medical procedure that I particularly enjoyed.

I'm more butt-hurt about that hack Damon Lindeolf taking plot points and ideas away from H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness". Now Guillermo Del Toro doesn't wish to do an adaptation because of it. I was so stoked for that adaptation. And now it's gone and I hate everyone.

That and the movie was a disappointment.

Looper. I liked it. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's prosthetics were a bit overdone though, borderlining on distracting. He still didn't look like a young Bruce Willis. Maybe in part because we all know what a young Bruce Willis looked like?

My sister kept going on and on about this movie Room 237, which details all the hidden messages Kubrick supposedly put in The Shining. Gonna watch it tonight.
