You're giving reviewers way too much credit. As usual, they're focusing on only the most obvious, superficial stuff (Network! Media! He's a sociopath!). They seem incapable of seeing the bigger picture.

All the reviews of this movie - even though they're mostly positive - seem to be missing the point. Everyone is talking about merely the "immorality of media" element; even my boy Armond White reduced it to that, dismissing it as a recycling of Network (though, really, Medium Cool or even Cannibal Holocaust would be more apt comparisons). That's part of its satire and commentary, of course, but not the ultimate point. What this movie is REALLY about is capitalism. It's about what capitalism teaches if adopted as a moral system - this is why we get so much material with Gyllenhaal's character spewing new-age business mantras and whatnot. And its commentary on the subject is savagely effective; even as a devout capitalist (who has often defended capitalism as the only moral economic system when debating the subject with my socialist-leaning best friend), Dan Gilroy had me second-guessing myself.

Armond White is my favorite film critic of all time. Really, one of my favorite writers of all time. I've gotten more insight and perspective from his work than from maybe any other writer.
