I listened to the fixer for the first time in a long time on my way into work. I fucking love this song.

I can actually envisage an alternate reality version of this song, where the instruments sound as though they're being played by flesh-and-blood human beings, that could be a really enjoyable slice of off-kilter, quirky power pop.
Too bad it didn't turn out like that.

You'd have enjoyed my mix more if I'd left The Sound in. Also, The Volcano.Heathen wrote:I'm starting to think downloading your mix was not that great an idea.LetMeSleep wrote:I like it.
The Fixer is certainly not essential but it's a decent slice of rock pop. Not something I'd care for them to revisit though.

I'm at least glad it exists so I can point to something concrete to illustrate everything I don't want Pearl Jam to be.

Everything the band does is accomplishing this for me right now.theplatypus wrote:I'm at least glad it exists so I can point to something concrete to illustrate everything I don't want Pearl Jam to be.

Re: Song of the Moment: The Fixer
I believe The Fixer partially defeats the whole notion that PJs been trying too hard to be PJ. The Fixer felt as out of left field and un-PJ-like as Who You Are and Nothing As It Seems did when they first came out. It was very unexpected. I also saw with The Fixer, and still see, alot of "I wish they came with a song in the mold of [insert favorite 94-02 era album cut]" which sounds ALOT like wanting PJ to be PJ. Of course, with Amongst the Waves or Lightning Bolt (the song) they did go that route but The Fixer is fresh, man. It just may be that it's not certain people's cup of tea, much like Who You Are wasn't alot of people's thing at the time and which led to tons of fans tuning out but others going all in. That's just the nature of these left turn things.
If you told me at any time before 2008 that they'd put out a song like this I'd think it was a joke. That said, it's a great roll down your windows, summery, cracklin jam that's fun for 3 min. Nothing more nothing less. Backspacer is still in my top half of PJ albums and The Fixer set such an unexpected tone for me that I'll always dig it for that reason.

Yup, totally agree.mastaflatch wrote:this is a good song. problem is, it doesn't fit the idea of what PJ is that most of us have. i was a bit shocked when i first heard it but it growed on me (unlike You Are which was also a departure or an experiment that gloriously failed at being a good song imo). there's a lot to like (the intro's riff, the transitions, Matt's drumming, Ed's performance) and to dislike (the cheesiness of the verses' riff, the lyrics, the good bits that are left unexploited) but in the end i think that this is much better than many songs of theirs. had it not been played at almost every single show since it's première, had it not been the lead single (with a video that screams PHONY), had it not been dissected to no end we would have enjoyed it a lot more for what it is i.e. a cool rock song with throwbacks to Huey Lewis and The News
