There's a higher frame rate version of the trailer out there now.

One clip is confusing me. It looks like loads of orcs are meant to be running out of caves but it looks like the tape was reversed and they're running backwards. Maybe the hfr version can clear that up

But RM prefers to rank things rather than count them..

well, first of all, a bunch of men are gonna turn up looking for reparations from the dwarves, cos they woke Smaug and Smaug destroyed their town, so that makes them responsible for paying, then the elves are gonna turn up cos Thranduil reckons he's owed either the jewels he paid for, or wants his money back(elves and dwarves never got on so he probably also just wants to give them a drubbing), meanwhile, Thorin has basically inherited the treasure sickness(greed) of his forefathers and has sent for backup from his dwarven kin, fearing these other guys would come to try take the treasure and ransack the mountain, both which he sees as his alone, rightly or wrongly, so a ton of Dwarves will turn up(even though they refused to back Thorins quest in the first place-dont know how PJ is going to handle that, if he does at all) but unbeknownst to them all, a huge Orc army are coming bent on killing everyone, so all the aforementioned elves dwarves and men, team up to beat the orcs.
Then there's some evil bats, and some animals lead by Beorn, who hopefully we get to see him kick some ass.

edit-
Spoiler: show
Bilbo, in the book at least, seeing how warped Thorin has become in his search for the Arkenstone, sneaks it out to Gandlaf and Elrond, in order to bring the seige to an end peacefully. Not sure thatll happen in the films, but there is a clip of what looks like Bilbo climbing down a rope, so maybe

I'm not excited about that battle...I am excited to see the white council(Galadriel, Saruman and Elrond) turn up at Dol Guldur to rescue Gandalf and kick Saurons ass..

From the trailer we see Saruman say 'leave Sauron to me'. In the books, when the white council 'defeats' Sauron, he feigns defeat and flees, unbeknownst to the WC, to Mordor, where his new digs have been prepared(Barad Dúr) so it looks like PJ is goin to take this opportunity to show us Saruman is either actually in league with Sauron, or make this the genesis of their relationship. Gandalf, Elrond and Galadriel all have the elven rings of power at this point, and though their power isnt weaponised per se, they probably will play a part in evicting Sauron.

It's got all the ingredients to be really awesome, whether it is or not, is another thing.

is that cave troll with a scrotum for a chin going to be in this one? what about the fat troll who wanted to eat them? what about the rock troll who wanted to smash them? what about the angry troll who simply wanted them to die?

My son walks around humming that song to himself. He loves the soundtracks and will listen to them before the radio any day. (This includes the LOTR trilogy too)

Funny you mention it, the melody in the song Thorin sings in Bag end is almost identical to the one Aragorn sings when he's crowned king, the 'out of the sea I came' bit, on the steps..

And - really????
Billy Connolly's introduction as a ginger-haired, pig-riding dwarf warrior is hilarious, with Connolly channelling his inner Glaswegian pub brawler.
