Well, Gone Girl has been topped. Worst movie of the year, and one of the worst movies ever made.

Quick version: It's dripping in cynicism and pessimism (which is a huge pet peeve of mine), it's maudlin, it's pretentious (every line containing the word "love" in this movie made my eyes roll so hard they nearly fell out of their sockets), and it's one of the most mind-numbingly vapid, vacuous, and flat-out moronic things I've ever watched. If our future scientists and astronauts are as self-absorbed, hyper-emotional, incompetent, and driven by petty personal sentiment as the idiots in this movie, it's no wonder people like Nolan think we're all so fucked.

On top of that, it is shockingly poorly directed and edited; Nolan can't even seem to compose a sequence that makes basic geographical sense. There is also an utter lack of awe, majesty, and lyricism to the visuals (something Gareth Edwards certainly can't be accused of in Godzilla ;) ). This guy is the king of modern hacks.

Wow I thought it was a surprisingly great true sci fi movie. I don't know what the hell LV is talking about.

I could nitpick a lot of things, it's got problems, but given then sheer ambition of this movie, I think he did a great job. I'm not sure how you tell a movie this sprawling without sacrificing some things. The narrative certainly doesn't fit the acceptable Hollywood parameters, and yeah the characters other than McConnawhatever are a bit thin, but I was suitably awed by the wonderment of it all.

It only annoyed me that they kept referring to time as a dimension, heh.

LV, you are the worst critic of all time. Please stop pretending you are one.

It's frustrating at times. The imagery is very abstract compared to something like Gravity. I found myself wanting to see more, but it's not that kind of movie. I thought the depictions of astronauts/scientists were much better in this one than Bullock's.

I'm still not the biggest Nolan fan, but mostly it just makes me happy that a movie like this can still be made, even if you have to churn out a lot of Batflicks first.

Two thumbs up.

LV, you crazy girl.

Intense, emotional, and the science and science fiction fan in me absolutely loved it.

I am also thinking it will endure additional viewings, something that is usually hard to pull off with a sci-fi movie that contains a "big reveal" or "payoff moment".

What is "emotional" or "ambitious" about this movie beyond the most superficial level? What insight or depth (or even intelligence) does this movie offer in regards to any of the thematic material it claims to explore, such as love, family, parenthood, etc.? How does this movie ever go beyond sentimental platitudes in regards to any of that?

Srsly tho, I found his relationship with his daughter to be extremely heartfelt, but that seems as obvious as it gets. I really don't know what you saw as superficial, but most personal interactions, maybe not all, seemed well written, acted, and natural to the narrative.

Spoiler: show
the first transmissions he received after being told 23 years had passed were gut wrenching, as a father myself. Cooper seeing his son, and then his grandson, within seconds...just powerful stuff
Again, McConnaughey killed it.

Nonsensical, stoner-"deep" shit like suggesting that love is some kind of metaphysical power that transcends time and space. We could start there.
