Sylvester Stallone is a great actor (who's given at least one all-time great performance, maybe more) and writer, and a very solid director.

Ha, haven't seen it. I just listened to the new How Did This Get Made? episode on it and they kind of sold me, though.

Yeah, that's what got me interested as well. Jason hated it so much that it must be worth a watch.

He's right on that one. Sly is also a remarkably insightful and articulate guy. I remember watching an interview a while ago and being surprised by that.

I think he'd probably agree. On the interview I saw, he says that the only time he feels he ever accomplished great cinema as a director was during "a couple of scenes in Rocky", or something to that effect.

it might have helped his career if he hadn't spent the first, oh, i dunno, 20 years or so playing up the super-macho hero archetype and instead maybe: acted...

this is the real problem i have with an actor like stallone - i don't doubt his intelligence, nor his ability to act or direct or whatever - what bothers me is that they go for the big blockbuster money roles that show nothing in the way of talent or artistry then wonder about how their public persona is ridiculed and belittled as shallow, one dimensional and lacking a desire to contribute to the 'art' of film...

this guy paints too, doesn't he? I think anyone who has that strong of an artistic side (painting, acting, writing, what have you) ought to be willing to give themselves over to the theatrical once in awhile instead of always being the super cop/soldier/boxer/etc/

that said, i did like him in nighthawks, but couldn't tell you why.

Except that maybe not everyone, including Stallone, shares your opinion on what constitutes the "art" of film, or that the type of action roles Sly often played "show nothing in the way of talent or artistry." I think that's a pretty narrow-minded, condescending attitude.

I never claimed to not be a snob.
also, i'm usually right in my snobbery.
there's a palpable resonance of intent in art that works. his shit don't resonate.

i've realized that the thing that irks me about LV is that there is nary a "call me crazy, but...," "i know i'm outnumbered here," or a "this might rub you the wrong way" contained within his brazen declarations. there are times we must qualify our statements, so as not to let the confidence of our comments attract ire. when words are uttered as if in a void, there is a presumption of objectivity to them.

Also, the intent of the artist does not dictate the quality of the art.
