But hey, that's just me; and why I haven't been around much. Life isn't that wonderful, I'm busy with a lot of work I've committed to for free, and I've not got many nice things to say about PJ.

I can't help being a bit worried about you, harmless. Not by the shitty life thing but the Arcade Fire writing interesting songs bit. Be safe, dude.

Most arcade fire songs are just three or four chords cycled and I never find it boring, quite the opposite it's kind of interesting because of its simplicity. The song suburbs is a good example. I like the fire. Shoot me.

Minimalist doesn't work for pj either though. They're a guitar band. Got Some is kind of minimal and it doesn't work. Wish it was much heavier guitar wise.

Yeah, I headed over to the show thread and listened. Good version. Still not a fan of this tune, though.
The Lolla version is actually kind of a trainwreck, it sounds like the whole band lose their place transitioning from the solo to the outro.
I also thought it was faster than I've ever heard them play it.
Still thought it was a good version, but yes, in general I am not a big fan of the super fast versions of all PJ songs at concerts these days.

Minimal doesn't preclude guitars though. I'm talking about structurally minimal songs. That's PJ as well, mostly. Verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus end.

Don't forget the prechorus. Pj do love a good prechorus

Less so recently.

song structure is pretty much irrelevant in the quality of their material. There are a million great songs written with standard structures, and a million shit ones.

I didn't deny that. I think I did the opposite, actually. Their recent songs are subpar for other reasons.

i think that Eddie's not caring enough about crafting songs that appeal to his guts or not able/willing to open up like he did back in the day. he mentionned that his songwriting modus operandi has changed now that he has kids but i also think that he's either changed his focus or became a bit too comfortable in his own skin - which is great if you're him but a bit less exciting when you're a long-time PJ fan. maybe he just quit smoking weed

Funnily enough, I'm positive I've either read or heard Ed mention that he took weed smoking back up in earnest from around 2008 or so after having given it up for most of the 2000s.

Was that in the fretboard journal interview? It's ringing a bell.

Edit-he does say in that interview 'I'm not into songs that play hard to get, I'm on for the cheap date'. I find that worrying but it would explain and confirm a lot of people's feelings here too.
