it was a really good show. i hadn't heard any of her music before the show, but i immediately procured the self-titled album after i saw her play. i've yet to delve into the rest of her music. what albums should i get next?

Strange Mercy is her best. Then her debut (Marry Me). But you can't go wrong with any of them. Her second album (Actor) has some of my favorite St. Vincent songs contained within.

But Strange Mercy.

The cadence and metre to "Name-tagged tourists sick at the sight of him/ Tight walking the sidewalk in spite of him/ As my headache moves from east to west" is one of very favorite things. Great imagery. Great poetry. I get chills every time.

It seems pretty similar to s/t based on what you gave me. I prefer S/T though

I would say S/T is less angular and more instantly accessible. It's poppier and punchier. Strange Mercy has a lot dark alleys and a broader emotional boulevards. It's a much more personal record. And there are some wonderful aggressive sounds. The compositions feel more adventurous if not more complex. But, yeah, S/T is awesome. Both are just tremendous efforts. But I like the abandoned, broken-lock diary feel of Strange Mercy.

Lengthy, but so, SO worth the time. Jesus. I love her so much. She's just a force.

Her interviews are my least favorite part of Annie Clark/St. Vincent... Too much over-analyzation in this one, and couldn't make it through, but overall I think she comes off too pretentious and uptight. I seem to recall a Bonaroo interview the year she played with The National that completely turned me off. Most likely it's due to the fact that I've kinda watched her personality change from a fun-loving child-prodigy who grew up in the same area I lived and played in the Polyphonic Spree... turn into this drab, detatched personality (or lack thereof).

edit... @2:20 is what I was referencing here:

Now give her some new toys to play with during the interview, my opinion COMPLETELY changes:

All's I'm sayin' is... I'd rather watch her fuck her guitar than talk.

Perfect example... Start this at the beginning for a bit of a sufferfest, or at 3:35 for some good porno!

She IS a badass!

Oh, and while I'm on an Annie Clark covers binge, here's a pretty great collaboration she did with Beck...

Thought you might enjoy this D,T:

Imma check out that Beck video later today and I'm SUPER excited. I think if I could go back to the create a super band game, I'd have Beck, Jack White, Neil Young, Annie Clark, Laura Burhenn and Dave Grohl as my band. Imagining what Annie and Beck and Jack could do together just makes my awesome bone ache.

But I did watch that first clip. And I don't see what you mean. She gives honest thoughtful answers. Also, it really rubs me the wrong way when people start accusing others of over analysing in a critical context. It's fine if you don't dig that kind of thing. But that's exactly what that SXSW interview is. Using overthinking as a criticism just leaves a terrible taste in my mouth.

Having said that, I have seen her come across stiff and awkward sometimes. I'm not sure I'd say pretentious, though maybe. I think everyone probably comes across that one at times. She's definitely still building her persona and changing things around all the time. But that doesn't bother me. It just adds to her beauty and mystique. To me it's akin to Tom Waits and his constant lying and self reinvention. It's all part of the act -- the character of Tom Waits. And all of these phases are just apart of the character of St. Vincent.

@2:20 (paraphrasing):
"If you don't take your creativity seriously, you shouldn't be on this planet... Go do data entry or something..."

I suppose RM is the last place I should accuse anyone of over-analyzing ANYTHING!

Sorry I left a bad taste in your mouth... Have some Orbit spearmint gum, 'Kick' back and watch those clips. You'll be glad you did :-)
