There aren't many modern actors I would say this about: that guy is a fucking movie star. He commands the screen and gives 110% in every performance. I love him.

Oh yeah he's definitely a movie star. I can watch a film of his at least. There are some actors/actresses I can't get through a movie though.

Rango constantly tries to force how charming it thinks it is down the viewer's throat.

Do you like other Verbinski movies? I just can't stand that guy. Everything feels so forced and hollow. I find watching his stuff really depressing. There's no vitality to it.durdencommatyler wrote:I haven't seen Rango. But I bet you're wrong.

You know, I've revisited that movie several times. I really want to love it. I keep trying, and in fact, I've been wanting to revisit it AGAIN for a while now. But so far, I feel the same way every time: gorgeous visuals, but I have trouble connecting with it beyond that. Which seems crazy since I love David Webb Peoples.malice wrote:what are your thoughts on blade runner and which is the best version?
I'm pretty sure I've only seen one version, though. Whichever one is the most widely viewed one. Maybe that's part of why I have trouble with it? Is there a particular version you'd recommend? I'll try watching that version next time, if so.

The first Pirates movie is fun in the same way going to Disney World is fun.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Do you like other Verbinski movies? I just can't stand that guy. And I like The Mexican quite a bit. I think that's a quirky, special little movie. The Ring was dumb. But not because of the direction. Still, I'm not gonna defend it.

The first Pirates is the only thing he's ever done I find tolerable. And even that gets sketchy after the first half hour, which is very solid.durdencommatyler wrote:The first Pirates movie is fun in the same way going to Disney World is fun.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Do you like other Verbinski movies? I really liked The Mexican when I first saw it as a teenager. But after I rewatched it, I found it had that trademark Verbinski soullessness. Can't dig it anymore.

You're skating awfully close to a mocking superiority and condescension that I'm not used to seeing from you, pal.LoathedVermin72 wrote:The first Pirates is the only thing he's ever done I find tolerable. LoathedVermin....
Do you believe that the American government and big business have colluded to create a "New World Order" through manufactured economic crises, sophisticated surveillance tech and—above all—inside-job terror attacks that fueled exploitable hysteria? Why or why not?

Re: Ask LoathedVermin
I'm biased since I first saw it in a movie theater when I was 16 or 17 (first release etc) and that wasn't the director's cut ... It included narration by decker which I liked although everyone I've even talked to about it disagrees with me on that.LoathedVermin72 wrote:You know, I've revisited that movie several times. it was stylistically a hugely influential movie though and even watching it today it holds up in ways other scifi movies of that age don't. You can believe even now that the world could turn into that world.
anyway, it didn't do well when it came out but grew to nearly mythic status over the years so I am quite pleased by that since it was one of the first movies I felt truly excited about.
as a story it's not fantastic I guess.
its something of a old style detective story, but in that setting it explodes into a million other things (to me) so I don't have a problem with it not connecting as successfully as a story. it's more of an entire piece that I like much better when not breaking it down to its core components.

Wait, are you referring to the "teenager" comment? Sorry, I really didn't mean that in any weird way - I was just being honest about when I first watched it. No disrespect or condescension intended, honestly.

Yeah, and those are all the reasons why I feel like I should love it. I think I'm going to buy the Blu-ray and watch every version to see if I can find one that sticks. Thanks for stoking my interest-flames, malice!
