But so far, I feel the same way every time: gorgeous visuals, but I have trouble connecting with it beyond that. Which seems crazy since I love David Webb Peoples.

I'm pretty sure I've only seen one version, though. Whichever one is the most widely viewed one. Maybe that's part of why I have trouble with it? Is there a particular version you'd recommend? I'll try watching that version next time, if so.

I'm biased since I first saw it in a movie theater when I was 16 or 17 (first release etc) and that wasn't the director's cut ... It included narration by decker which I liked although everyone I've even talked to about it disagrees with me on that.

it was stylistically a hugely influential movie though and even watching it today it holds up in ways other scifi movies of that age don't. You can believe even now that the world could turn into that world.

anyway, it didn't do well when it came out but grew to nearly mythic status over the years so I am quite pleased by that since it was one of the first movies I felt truly excited about.

as a story it's not fantastic I guess.
its something of a old style detective story, but in that setting it explodes into a million other things (to me) so I don't have a problem with it not connecting as successfully as a story. it's more of an entire piece that I like much better when not breaking it down to its core components.
