Either this is sarcasm or wut
dead serious. Drive was pretty lame compared to most of his other stuff, and Only God Forgives was just straight up mediocre.
Please explain how the fuck OGF could be considered "catering to a broader audience." It was easily his most esoteric film to date.
I would argue that Valhalla Rising was his "most esoteric film." but, I can admit OGF wasn't terribly mainstream, still I felt it was a fail.
Yeah, after I posted that I realized it was about on par with VR in terms of esotericism.

Anyway, the guy can do no wrong for me at this point. I've loved literally every movie he's made with the exception of Fear X and Pusher II (and it's not like those are bad).

To be fair, I hated everything he did prior to Spring Breakers. That movie was a game-changer.

How can you justify being excited about a Roman Polanski film?

So regardless of raping an underage girl, you're okay with continuing to support him?

The trailer is awesome, for sure. But I've yet to see a single Mad Max film. So I'm not all together excited for a new one. Regardless of Tom Hardy.

I'm a feminist and Polanski is my all-time favorite director.
Shouldn't it bother you that he raped a 13 year old?
Of course that whole debacle bothers me. But that doesn't mean I can't admire his films.

So it's okay to support a rapist provided his movies are amazing?

Gotcha.

This is something I've struggled with for years. Like I said to Dev, of course the whole debacle bothers me, but in the end, that doesn't mean I can't admire his films. It all opens up questions of compartmentalization and judging the art vs. the artist and all. I've never really been able to reconcile it all and come to a conclusion on the subject, but again, ultimately, I would be lying if I said I didn't find his body of work to be incredible. I can watch his films and become involved in them regardless of what he's done in his personal life.

I'm not sure it's fair to say I'm supporting him as an individual by loving his films. I'm supporting the art, not necessarily the artist.

That's a cop out. For an artist that is still alive, and profiting, from his work the "art" and the "artist" can not exist independently of each other.

I get what you're saying, but again, I'm not going to lie about how good the films are because of what he did. Like I said, I've never quite been able to reconcile it all on an intellectual level.

The fact is, unless you want to be willing to say "I SUPPORT VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN" you shouldnt even view the films long enough to base an opinion of them.

I definitely do not agree with that. His work has enriched my life and I'm not going to deprive myself of it.

What if it were to come out now that Francis Ford Coppola raped someone? Does that mean that all of a sudden The Godfather is an invalid work of art and no one should watch it?

By many accounts, Thomas Edison was a giant shitbag. Should people have not used light bulbs while he was still alive?

Of course not, and I'm not suggesting they are. Just offering a similar scenario on a different scale.

I guess let's make it equal: say Thomas Edison DID rape a little girl. I ask again: Should people have not used light bulbs while he was still alive?
