Would they start making overtly racist music from that point on? Also, would I pick up on all kinds of racist undertones in their previous albums that I hadn't noticed before?@SkitchP wrote:If your favorite band's lead singer came out in support of lynching black people, would you still buy their album?

Re: Movies of 2015
My old roommate Rick that Ed always hated sued him for trying to sell an old concert tape of Bad Radio's first gig. So I got dragged into that because I had the partial rights. . Me and Beth shot the video, so only me and her have rights to it. He really went over the line harassing Rick to where he had to move and hide out. Finally Jerry Garcia's old lawyer (yes, the Greatfull Dead Jerry) and took his case for free. Ed had his law firm taking up a floor in a high rise on it. David vs Goliath. It turned out that Ed didn't expect him to fight back. So the privacy laws, stalking harassment fibbing to a judge to get a search warrant etc had them in deep hot water. And Rick had provable damages. So they ended up settling, but I can't say how much. Eddie fired his law firm after that. Now how did I get on this tangent? This was about 2005-6. It got some national news coverage as well if you can believe that.

I think it’s just that we compartmentalize these things differently. For me, when I pay money for something, I’ve never looked at it as supporting said thing. I pay money to see a movie because I want to see the movie, not necessarily because I want to support the filmmaker or the studio. Same when I buy a Blu-ray – I want to own a copy because I enjoy collecting Blu-rays and I like the movie. The buck pretty much stops there for me. It’s the same as buying socks – I’m not buying them to support the sock company, I’m buying them because I want some new socks.@SkitchP wrote:I guess you and I are just different people.LoathedVermin72 wrote:I bought a vinyl copy of Filosofem, even though Varg Vikernes is a known racist and murderer. To me, all it boils down to is that I spend my money on things that make me happy. I suppose that is fundamentally selfish, but I don't really have a problem with being selfish when it comes to what I want to spend my money on.@SkitchP wrote:That feels like a pretty "me first" view of things.LoathedVermin72 wrote:I think it’s just that we compartmentalize these things differently. But by actively promoting that individuals work by talking about how good it is, you are then encouraging others to act selfishly as well. If someone is good enough at something, they should be allowed to do whatever they want?LoathedVermin72 wrote:To me, all it boils down to is that I spend my money on things that make me happy. How are we feeling about Bill Cosby at this point?

Well I feel like his comedy and the strong family man he portrayed is more valuable to me than thinking of him as a rapist, so im just going to ignore that. It's not like he raped me.

Re: Movies of 2015
I don’t really believe in conflating things or ideas with individuals. When I am praising or criticizing a movie, that doesn’t necessarily mean I am praising or criticizing the individual who made it. They’re separate entities. I understand that, through a trickle-down effect, my praise or criticism could lead to a few more or a few less dollars in the bank account of that individual, but I am not going to go through my life censoring my honest feelings on something because of that.@SkitchP wrote:But by actively promoting that individuals work by talking about how good it is, you are then encouraging others to act selfishly as well.LoathedVermin72 wrote:To me, all it boils down to is that I spend my money on things that make me happy. To me, conflating the art and the artist seems like a similar line of thinking to saying that criticizing Islam is tantamount to criticizing Muslims. Again, separate entities.
Of course not, and me watching and liking Polanski’s movies is not tantamount to me saying he should be allowed to rape people. I have my thoughts on his art, and I have my thoughts about what he did. Separate entities.@SkitchP wrote: If someone is good enough at something, they should be allowed to do whatever they want?

Is there anyone, or anything, you have chosen not to support simply because of ethically or morally it bothers you?

Again, there's a difference between choosing not to "support" someone and liking/buying/praising a work of art made by someone you don't support. Support the art, not the artist. Hate the sin, not the sinner. They're not one thing.@SkitchP wrote:Is there anyone, or anything, you have chosen not to support simply because of ethically or morally it bothers you?LoathedVermin72 wrote: Of course not, and me watching and liking Polanski’s movies is not tantamount to me saying he should be allowed to rape people. Any financial contribution you make that the sinner profits from supports the sinner.
