Someone also suggested earlier, and maybe rightly so, that some of this might just be the product of how Stip (and I) feels about the album as a whole. For me, because there are quite a few clunky spots on the record, it's harder to agree with an argument that this beginning is the start of a magical journey. For me, it's not. The first five songs on the record are five of the better songs that made the cut, but I've always had a such a general lack of affection for Off He Goes, Habit, Lukin, and Mankind that the album has never been one that I can look at fairly as a complete entity.

Original tracklist? Does anyone have this?

I strangely agree with both camps on this. No Code is not a fav of mine and has never been. On a recent listen I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would but the tranisitions don't always work for me. Maybe it's just the songs. I don't really care for most of Side B with the exception of PTense. Around The Bend and RM are okay but not a fave. Lukin and Habit are either bearable or skipped.
As for Side A. It's one of the nicest runs of their catalogue. The transition from Sometimes to HHail has always reminded me of the first time I heard RHCP's One Hot Minute. That opening kickdrum in Warped sent my tea flying. HH did the same thing. Thematically for me it works as a sort of flashback in a movie. HH gives Side A a counterpoint for all the reflection. and the run of the first six tracks is great. Only Vitalogy and Ten have a better first side.

Interesting. I thought there was only one recording session for NC so PT and OHG mustn't have been considered. And could there be an alt mellow HH out there (like forever young on Planet Waves? or the mythical Mercury/Transience?)

I'm pretty sure there was a number of sessions for No Code; at least one in July 1995 in Chicago and some further recording in 1996. The Chicago sessions began the day after the Soldier Field show and we know they recorded All Night and began In My Tree there (amongst others, presumably.)

I maintain that my fondness for "All Night" partly stems from having owned this poster. For years it was one of the few tangible connections I had between the music that had been legitimately released by the band and the archive of treasure I was sure they were yet to unearth to us. Seeing it finally appear on "Lost Dogs" felt like a small victory of sorts.

I do not dislike Black Red Yellow at all (in fact, I kind of like it), but I find it shocking that it was so close to making it on to an album. And No Code, at that. It has b-side written all over it.

I had this "poster" (it was just a page out of a magazine) up on my wall for years around that time and i definitely remember BRY and All Night being on the original tracklisting, but i don't remember Habit showing up twice.

well the presence of mankind opens up some space for a song like BRY or All Night (both of which I think are much better).
