I like them for the rivalries and what it does for the schedule, so I'm for them overall. I blame the NFC South for being so fucking terrible that it got us to have this argument at all.

We need divisions so the Lions can aspire to win something one day.

Re: 2014 NFL Season
The NFC South had a good run, Tampa is going through ownership and coaching hire mistakes, the Falcons have been an abject disaster of inexplicable roster management since having a really great 2008 and have essentially played without an offensive line for 2 years. Carolina made some very very stupid moves signing a few guys to huge contracts and then going into the season with essentially 2 receivers on the team one of which is a rookie. The Saints are dealing with roster turnover, some bad contracts and a market correction on their defense from last year. It happens.
It's really not a big deal. It just all happened at once and got worse with a lot of season ending injuries.
Can't win your division? Pobrecito, the wild card is a gift anyway. These are the rules and the structure and a team making the playoffs with a losing record is as rare as hen's teeth.
Everyone knows how it goes and we're overreacting anyway because the season isn't even over yet.
If it happens, it still won't be cause to redo the system. Oh it's so horrible a wild card team at 11-5 has to go on the road to begin the playoffs....home field advantage has mattered in 2 places Seattle with their specially crafted artificially loud stadium, and New Orleans (and that hasn't looked that special the last 2 weeks)
We're making too much of this. If you're a good enough team to win the super bowl you're a good enough team to win a road playoff game.
If you're 10-6 and miss the playoffs..... win 2 more games.

Re: 2014 NFL Season
It's not just that, but everything. Look at Pittsburg....since 1970, here are their head coaches: Noll, Cowher, Tomlin.Electromatic wrote:Man, coming out of Baylor I never would have thought.... RG3...clubhouse disaster.
Washington head coaches since 1970:
Vince Lombardi, George Allen, Jack Pardee, Joe Gibbs, Rich Petibone, Norv Turner, Terry Robinski, Marty Schottenheimer, Steve Spurrier, Joe Gibbs (again), Jim Zorn, Mike Shanahan, Jay Gruden.
Starting QBs since 2000:
Robert Griffin, Kirk Cousins, Colt McCoy, Rex Grossman, John Beck, Donovan McNabb, Jason Campbell, Todd Collins, Mark Brunell, Patrick Ramsey, Tim Hasselbeck, Shane Matthews, Danny Wuerffel, Tony Banks, Jeff George, Brad Johnson.
Starting QBs for New England since 2000:
Drew Bledsoe, Tom Brady.
The one real constant to all the sucking is Snyder. It's just been an inconsistent, and toxic atmosphere since he's owned the team. Is that just coincidence? Could be, but I don't think so. It has seemed like he's trying to right the ship, by letting Bruce Allen (GM) run things, but we'll see how that plays out.

Re: 2014 NFL Season
Well, they were also the #1 seed in 2010 and 2012, and were a play away from the Super Bowl in the latter year.Electromatic wrote:the Falcons have been an abject disaster of inexplicable roster management since having a really great 2008
It's not really fair to put the six pre-Snyder coaches on there. Gibbs was there for twelve years (and could have been there forever if he had chosen to), Allen for seven years, Norv Turner for seven. There was a lot of stability there. Rich Petibone really only had his one season because they weren't really prepared for Gibbs to step down, and Lombardi obviously would have been there much longer had he not died.darth_vedder wrote:Washington head coaches since 1970:

I mean, the 49ers (five Super Bowls) had 13 head coaches in that same span.

Re: 2014 NFL Season
I've thought about it. It depends on what the situation is here and if I could find at least one person to go. Perhaps skitch would go if its in detroit?doug rr wrote:hey mecca, since they arent playing in buffalo now on sunday are you going to travel to wherever they're playing?

I always thought it was impressive that Joe Gibbs won a Super Bowl with 3 different starting QBs.

Detroit it is. I didn't think it would be an option due to the Lions Thanksgiving game, but I guess two and a half days is enough time between games.Mecca wrote:I've thought about it. Alas I am on solo kid duty until about 10:30. So the game is not possible, although I am off work the next day, so I could do a drink or two afterwards should the option present itself

Re: 2014 NFL Season
There are many reasons to people to hate Dan Snyder. Here's one that appeals to me and perhaps other Broncos fans: every time I hear that RGIII got special treatment from Snyder when Mike Shanahan was there (as this video repeats), I feel that there's a good chance that Snyder may have single-handedly torpedoed Shanny's chances at the Hall of Fame--instead turning his perception into George Seifert 2.0.
