I don’t think any other filmmaker captures the sense of transience and isolation that Antonioni does. Blowup knocks me out, man. I think it’s a gorgeous, haunting movie that I like more than anything by Godard or Bunuel (both of whom are also great) – they both make very focused, pointed films that tend to have a biting edge. Antonioni is calmer, more lyrical. His perspective is much more philosophical and grandiose than Godard or Bunuel, who I think are more overtly political. He has this beautiful way of tying human longing and dislocation to the imagery of his settings, putting people into perspective against the backdrop of the environment they inhabit. This is perhaps best exemplified by the bravura final sequence of L’eclisse, when the unresolved narrative fades into a dialogue-free montage in which expressionistic shots of human beings and environmental beauty merge into a visual poem, with only the sound of wind audible. Antonioni speaks to mankind’s innate search for meaning and keenly illuminates the personal ways that search manifests itself – romance, natural beauty, death, ennui, detachment, etc. He elevates his characters’ personal searches for meaning to an existential level. His body of work is about the meaning of everything. The Argonaut wrote:Well, I'm still not about to go run to see more Antonioni. There is definitely something to it, but I wouldn't call it a masterpiece. There are similarities to Godard, but Godard is better looking, cooler, and just overall more compelling. There are similarities to Bunuel, but Bunuel is more hilarious and subversive. I don't quite see the appeal here.LoathedVermin72 wrote:It's a masterpiece. Of course, so is L'Avventura. But Blowup is better. The Argonaut wrote:Going to a screening of Blow-Up later tonight. The only other Antonioni I've seen is L'aaventura, and it didn't send me running to go see more Antonioni. fingers crossed

Yeah, my mom enjoyed the book despite being a militant atheist. She said the movie doesn't hold the same weight and things were obviously changed to draw the Fox News/evangelical crowd.Rangi Guy wrote:I read the book of this a while back and enjoyed it - got the movie sitting there to watch, but haven't gotten around to itturned2black wrote:Heaven is for Real.
