Re: Lets Actually Listen to the Album: Lightning Bolt
sirens is a really good song, guys. really good. its a beautiful sentiment. loving someone so much it makes you fear the day that one of you will die. loving someone to the point where losing them is the only thing you fear in life. don't get me wrong, most of the rest of the album is awful. but sirens is great so deal with it. love y'all.

Re: Lets Actually Listen to the Album: Lightning Bolt
So I'm listening to this on headphones for (I think) the first time. I gave it a few cursory listens (mostly in the car) when it came out and enjoyed it well enough.
But now...yeah, this is really not good. The production is god-fucking-awful. Everything is so crisp and compartmentalized and BORING. There's no punch, mud, weight, alchemy to the songs. Where's the sonic depth of Binaural? The soft, warm, raw feel of Riot Act?
Eddie's voice is pretty rough. He sounds like he has a cold.
Most of the songs are so formulaic and unremarkable. And when mixed with that overly polished production, they become unbearably corny and boring. And when you look back at Ten-Riot Act, it's embarassing to think that this is the same band. It feels like artistic bankruptcy.
So much for aging gracefully. Ick.

"Pendulum" is a pretty good song for the most part, but still severely damaged by shitty production and how blown out Eddie's voice sounds. It also never really reaches a proper crescendo.

I feel the same LV. It's a claustrophobic album. I can't be bothered saying much else as I've sid it before. Bottom of the pile.

That's a great way to put it. It has no aural depth, no sense of space.LetMeSleep wrote:It's a claustrophobic album.

Agreed. Though I haven't been motivated to post about it, I've tried on a few occasions over the last couple of months to listen to the album and your post above echoes most of my feelings, LV.LoathedVermin72 wrote:That's a great way to put it. I try to listen to it, but I can't. There is nothing to draw me in.

Still in heavy rotation in my car these days, along with Vitalogy. Two completely different records but for me, the fact that I still want to listen to LB all the way through (except FD) and not just Vitalogy all the time means it sits near the top. Vitalogy is my favourite but LB is a respectable number 4.
Pearl Jam is the only band I'll spend money on.

I haven't been able to get through this record since the first couple months it came out. I like many of the songs, but the damn thing sounds *so bad*.
The first time I put it on my turntable and Getaway came on I thought I forgot to turn the power amp on.
Throw out FD, LTRP, and SBMS and you have a pretty strong EP.

fyi, many of the first shipments had faulty vinyls that they ended up replacing for people.
It still sounds bad as far as production goes, but the vinyl is a much better improvement of backspacer.

Yeah, I would think mine was defective, but the flac download they gave me has the same issues.Strat wrote:Jessica Fletcher wrote:I haven't been able to get through this record since the first couple months it came out. I like many of the songs, but the damn thing sounds *so bad*.
