Of course you get a lot of people handing flyers for other races. There's one next week where you start at 1:50am and then there's a big pajama party afterward. I'm thinking about doing that, it would be different for sure.

I've been running every other day for about 10 days now. But, I've actually gained a little weight due to hitting the microbrew too much. Back up to 170. 10-milers have all been in the 68-71 minute range. The dude I was supposed to pace at the Javelina Jundred called to say he wasn't gonna do it, which came as a relief. Looking forward to some epic desert trail runs this winter.

20 miles in 2:34
Youngest in the running stroller. Wasn't great, but wasn't a disaster either. Beautiful weather. Amazing sunset.

Re: The running/exercise streak thread
Well, season one in the books! What an incredible amount of work all of the non-coaching stuff is. That said, it was a lot of fun. 2 of my girls ran well enough to qualify for the state meet. It's the first time in my school's history we've ever had more than one runner qualify. I am looking forward to a break, but I am already excited about next year. Health willing, I have 2 boys and another girl whom I think could get to join my returning qualifiers in the state meet if they work hard.daft twat wrote:So this is big news in my life - I got the head coaching job for cross country at my school. It's boys and girls, grades 7-12. I am grossly under-qualififed, having never been in cross country when I was in school and having only 2 years of coaching experience with junior high baseball. I am following a beloved coach (he got burnt out on teaching) who built the program from single digit participants to numbers in the 40s. I hope I don't fuck this up.
One big negative - I have an all day coaching certification class tomorrow. I have to dvr the England game. I hate recorded sports.

Re: The Running Thread
I ended up pacing a friend at the Javelina Jundred after she had someone bail on her. It was the second to last 15-mile loop and she was in bad shape. I struggle with pacing because my first instinct is to say, "Stop being a pussy and run!" But I think I did a decent job with her. I pushed her a bit, but we also took some walking breaks. I made sure she stuck to her calorie regime and made her laugh a few times. She ended up destroying her previous PR for the event.
So between the stroller run and pacing my friend, I did 35 miles on Saturday and another 10 on Sunday. I need to find me a race.

I feel much better running a couple hours after waking up, compared to running after work.

I signed up for a gym thinking I would go after work. I don't know what I was thinking, there is no way in hell I am going to the gym after a long day at work.Bammer wrote:I feel much better running a couple hours after waking up, compared to running after work.

Re: The Running Thread
My racing year of 2014 did not end as I had hoped. Finding time to run proved awfully difficult coming in to my last few races and a flare of tendonitis in my left left was far deeper than my right. A week before my third to last race I got a mile in and my leg would not bend without absolutely atrocious pain, I was a total gimp around the house. Therapist had me choose which race was more important to me but it came down to if I want to start training I have to basically rest and repair. It was tough signing off on my final races of the year but any donations had been made and I felt that I had a solid first year of running. My half times on the year:
Rock 'n' Roll USA - Washington, DC 02:32:14
Cox Sports Providence Half Marathon 2:18:03
Jamestown Half Marathon 2:12:15
Hogsback Half Marathon 2:10:05
Newport Half Marathon 2:07:10
Certainly wasn't setting the world on fire but I felt the overall time shaving was a fair accomplishment after only run my first miles ever in early January. I have a prescription (literally) for new running kicks since the PT noticed some particular wear after the year's miles so we'll see how those go. Probably get a few miles in tomorrow before a shit ton of raking and then get back to a solid exercise routine starting Monday. Depending how my leg adjusts to the mileage I marked down November 29th to start training for a full, Charlottesville is my pie in the fucking sky goal on April 4th. Sugarloaf on May 17th would be the back-up if I can't get the weekly mileage on time. Time will tell.
Also t2b... are you considering a streak again? Had some dust settle and that might be a solid reinforcer.

Re: The Running Thread
I don't think so. Zane Grey is a pretty big race for me. It'll be full of elites and demands my full attention training-wise. I'll be doing lots of hills and tough training runs and will need full "rest days". I kinda don't want any distractions. I used the streak last year as a way to help build my base, but this year, I came out of summer in pretty decent shape (despite being heavier then I would like) and don't feel like I need the extra miles.oasisfan35 wrote:Also t2b... are you considering a streak again? That shouldn't stop you, however. I'll probably be in here more when my training ramps up and will provide you with some extra motivation if needed.

Re: The Running Thread
Sounds like a plan. I'm not at the mileage necessary to start a Higdon plan but should be by the 29th. From then on I'll just throw some resistance training in on the rest days.turned2black wrote:I don't think so. Zane Grey is a pretty big race for me. I can imagine needing full rest days but that race looks like it will be quite an accomplishment, good luck of course.

I had a shitty week. It was a release week at work, so I only ran twice. Then only put in 14 this weekend. Ugh.

Re: The Running Thread
Hey t2b, in GD I saw you post about having plantar fasciitis. How have you dealt with that in the past. I'm pretty sure I've got it now. It started during my marathon training but I couldn't cut back. Now I'm upping my miles again and I'm hurting. Besides cutting back, are there any home treatments you'd recommend? That have worked for you in the past?turned2black wrote:I had a shitty week. It was a release week at work, so I only ran twice. Then only put in 14 this weekend. Ugh.

I basically do a lot of this.

Make sure to stretch the shit out of it before AND after you run.

Thanks. I try to stretch even on days that I don't run.

Re: The Running Thread
I hear that. Ventured to the running store with my script, basically I needed a high stability shoe but with plenty of movement in the front. Tried a few (4) pairs on but unfortunately none were New Balance. Trying to have an open mind and actually preferred the Peral Izumis over the Brooks, which I constantly hear raved over. Have gotten two runs in since Sunday and just trying to pay attention to how my legs feel after kicking off the rust. The ITB issues haven't popped up which is cool and I must say the shoes are comfortable but more miles will tell. I did put my shoes from this past year's efforts on and I can definitely feel the difference in the wear left v right.turned2black wrote:I had a shitty week.
This past years first effort I was pretty much in the mindset to get the races done. I had the goal to better my half time as the year progressed but didn't focus on negative splits or really smart racing. I'd like to change that focus this year and have been increasing the speed on the tread as the run goes on. Starting slow but the miles feel better, albeit it's pretty early in the game. I need to get some damn night gear though since I've enjoyed running outdoors.
Good luck with the plantar work d,t hope it does the trick.

Re: The Running Thread
Feel I can finally man up and start posting here. Working on getting back into shape and including a regular running regimine for the first time in ten years. Looking forward to seeing how this goes. It rains so much here over the winter that I'm trying treadmill running for the first time. I get wet enough biking to work, don't need that for running.
Friday did 20 minutes on 6% incline at 5.5 mph/10:55 pace.
Saturday, after a 3/4 mile swim in the afternoon, 22 minutes on 6% incline at 5.7 mph/ 10:32 pace.
Today did 24 minutes on 6% incline at 5.8 mph/10:21 pace.

Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.

I have to work in L.A. two days a week for the next 3 months. My running schedule is beyond fucked. But I did get a nice run in Malibu (Charmlee Wilderness Park) last week.

"Westridge Trail, Sullivan Canyon
At the top of Sullivan Canyon is the Westridge Trail -- marked on most maps as the West Mandeville Fire Road. The trailhead for a 3.6-mile ascent begins where the residential neighborhood ends, at the very top of Westridge Road; it ends unofficially at the observation tower at Mulholland Drive...."
Though I'm sure your difficulty is probably from time and not a lack of routes to run. Good luck.
I also need to get some cold weather gear pronto, new shoes are working out well though.

Train was delayed last evening so I had to really hoof it as soon as I was let off, 8:04 was the first mile second was probably close to that but I never turned my Garmin off when I got in so it ran for a while. Either way, holy fuck did my shins burn.
Got ~ 5.5 miles on the trail with the pups today. Absolutely gorgeous outside with the wind just kicking up a bit now. Probably treadmill miles for myself later on.
