Haven't heard it yet but it can't seriously be worse than Runaway, can it?turned2black wrote:It's a good song, I'm just not a fan of the chorus. If it were on High Violet, it would be the worst song on the album.

I fucking love Runaway. So yes, it's considerably worse.Heathen wrote:Haven't heard it yet but it can't seriously be worse than Runaway, can it?turned2black wrote:It's a good song, I'm just not a fan of the chorus. If it were on High Violet, it would be the worst song on the album.

Runaway is gorgeous.
National songs take like 10 spins to make sense, then you're fucked for life.

Re: The National | Trouble Will Find Me [20 May]
that's cool... i'm just saying that The National have never been a band that I loved from the first listen... even going back to the first time I heard 'Murder Me Rachel' on WOXY in 2003. i bought the album based on that song and 'Available', but didn't FULLY get into them until after Alligator came out.turned2black wrote:Sorry, but I disagree.solace wrote:nope.turned2black wrote:It's a good song, I'm just not a fan of the chorus. I have been playing it all day. I'm not saying it's a bad song, I just don't love it.
they're a band that makes full albums, not singles.
that said, i still think this is a solid 7.5 or 8 track, based on the lyrics and that refrain. do i think it'll be the best song on the album? heavens no. from someone I know who has heard it, he said it's about in the middle for him... maybe towards the bottom half.
Graceless will "excite" the people who prefer their heavier stuff (Abel, Mr. November, etc.)

High Violet took at least 15-20 for me to not find it a disappointment compared to Boxer or Alligator. it's still not as quite as good, but it's not exactly "worse" eitherHeathen wrote: it didn't take me 10 listens to get into Boxer or High Violet
i won't be surprised at all if i take to this/like it way more than High Violet, which i still loved (was def in my top 3 of 2010)
i sorta equate this song to 'Sorrow', a song that is in my top 5 on HV, but if i'd heard it out of the context of the album, I doubt i'd have loved it nearly as much.

From today's BBC 6 live session...
Steve Lamacq: "...this really immediate type where you engage with on the first listen (Sea of Love)."
Matt: "yeah. I don't think... We usually aren't very good at those kind of songs, but somehow I think it sort of worked that way on a few songs on this record"

I don't see myself listening 20 times to something I find disappointing. I don't mind not being a loyal fan.

Re: The National | Trouble Will Find Me [20 May]
Disappointing doesn't mean bad...
It means my expectations were insanely high. It was "disappointing" to how I envisioned/wished for in my head, not compared to other albums by other bands coming out at that time.
I didn't dislike it at all, even at first. Big difference. Has nothing to do with being "loyal", I don't give two fucks about that, regardless of the band.
No Code took me 6 months to a year to fully appreciate, and even then it continued to grow and reveal itself.

Well yeah if you don't dislike it at first it's a different story, obviously. I'm more talking about stuff that doesn't even make you want to spin it again. Like this new song. If the whole album excites me as much as this song I doubt it will make it to 10 listens or even 5.
Sorrow is great and I have no doubt I would have loved it anyway.

maybe it's just the fanboy in me, but i haven't really found a song of theirs "dull" or "bland" post Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers i guess.
sure there's plenty that aren't as great as others, but there's very very little songs in their catalog i'd ever consider skipping on an album.
