Re: The Best Moment in....S/T
Off the top of my head:
Life Wasted: There are a lot, but nothing is going to top the outro solo. One of Mike's best
WWS: This is a top 5 pearl jam song for me, but my favorite moment may be the another waaaayyy... scream in the chorus and the transition into the more ragged final verse.
Comatose: This was a top 10 for a long while. Probably isnt' anymore. I think the overall attitude of the song, especially following up Riot Act. The sheer existence of energy as a selling point is less compelling now that we've had few more lively albums
Severed Hand: that stuttering riff in the second verse
Marker: The U2ish feel of the chorus and outro
Parachutes: The way the song glides gently from the 'parachutes have opened now' lyric into the next verse
Unemployable: I don't really care for much in this song. I don't like the shine on Eddie's voice, the Oh Oh Oh Oh's, and I think the lyrics end up being condescending, albeit unintentionally so. And yet I like Let the Records Play
Big Wave: The GOT ME A RIIIIIDDDEEEE part--the music and the vocals. Although my favorite part of this song is probably the demo that recently surfaced
Gone: The chorus felt thrilling after a many years drought without an uplifting anthem, but hasn't aged well. The 'if nothing is everything' part is still pretty good, as is that little sideways riff someone is playing going into the final 'I'm gone'
Wasted Reprise: I like the idea of this and in general think they executed it well. The placement seems odd with three more songs to go
Army Reserve: The verses are nice, as is the spacey feel of the song, though I wish they committed more fully to it.
Come Back: This has aged really well for me, and continues to be a go to track if I feel like listening to S/T (in my top 5 on the album behind parachutes and the first 3 songs). I'm a big fan of eddie's broken performance
Inside Job: Obviously the lyrics. I do like that moment where we have those piano flourishes in the initial build, and I do kinda like the climax of the song from the 'let me run into the rain' to the end. Not a high point in their catalog, but it's nice.
This is a really good album.

Probably the bridge of Big Wave or something in Army Reserve. I still really hate this album, but I like those two songs.

I used to really like WWS and Unemployable but I was told I was wrong to feel that way so I stopped.

Re: The Best Moment in....S/T
Lots of good moments...probably the first 4 tracks are amongst the best material they made.
Even if some of the songs dont work, they do have a good spot on them.

Bridge --> Verse riff kicks back in --> "I feel a SICKness...I sickness coming over me..."
That final verse in Marker is perfectly delivered by Ed.

The last 45 seconds of Parachutes.
Plus, it's only track where the production/mixing etc... doesn't take away from the song.

Yeah man, this needs a remix/remaster badly.
The "And Love" near the end of Parachutes, which is just a lovely song in general.

The riff / breakdown in Marker, and Parachutes (the entire song) are my favorite moments.

Re: The Best Moment in....S/T
I honestly really like this album
The outro on Life Wasted, the verses on WWS, the chorus in Severed Hand, the riff in Marker, the final "and love" part in Parachutes
The "oh-oh-oh-ohs" in Unemployable (I'm pretty sure it's probably the part people like the less tho, the whole song is amazing imo anyways, I might pick the verse riff as well), the "if nothing is everything" part in gone is pretty good too,the intro of Army Reserve & the last minute of Come Back.
The album sounds bad and all but I definetely like this way better than the last 2.

Agreed, the songs display substantially more depth and thoughtfulness than anything on either of the last two records.chewm wrote:The album sounds bad and all but I definetely like this way better than the last 2.

Likewise. I love both of these songs so much it colors my opinion of the entire album, which is why I don't hate it as much as a lot of people here.darth_vedder wrote:The riff / breakdown in Marker, and Parachutes (the entire song) are my favorite moments.

Yeah, they are both the stand out tracks for me.matt reeder wrote:Likewise. Another moment I like, especially from the Black Market Avocado mix spenno put together, is the jam in Army Reserve. The rest of the song doesn't do much for me, but that part is pretty cool.

Army Reserve is such a cool song yeah...i love when they actually jam with a "new" song, like they are doing now with Love Boat Captain.darth_vedder wrote:Yeah, they are both the stand out tracks for me.matt reeder wrote:Likewise. And Army Reserve and Big Wave are two great one for that.
