Are you a big Miles fan, Andy? "Konda" is a bit of a rarity.

not a 'big' fan by any means. have the classic records, and a couple of others, but i've hardly delved much deeper. that said, i downloaded 'the complete columbia album collection' a couple years ago with the intent to do just that (thus, konda showing up in my random list). if there is any of those albums you'd recommend taking a listen to first, i'm open to your suggestions.

edit: i have porgy & bess, miles ahead, kind of blue, bitches brew, sketches of spain, and miles 1954 (which i believe is an off-label issue), and a couple of compilations (blue moods and another i am forgetting).

Man, that sounds like a treat, Andy. If that set is "complete"-complete, there are probably 70-80 albums there -- and that's only his stuff on Columbia. I hope you can summon the motivation to take on the whole journey.

As far as personal recommendations, I think "In a Silent Way" is the finest album Miles ever produced -- kind of a meeting point of his acoustic work, his electric work, and his orchestral work, but still something singular unto itself. It's one of my favorite albums of all time and one of the few jazz records I think has the potential to appeal to someone who actively hates the genre. Apart from that, I am partial to the run of quintet records that preceded "Silent Way" (starting with "ESP" and running through "Filles de Kilimanjaro") -- all of them are fantastic and there is no wrong jumping-in point. That said, if you have the patience, you could do a lot worse than just starting at the beginning and working your way through the set -- the gradual evolution in his artistry is a thing to behold, marginal from one record to the next but stunning when you get to the end and look back and see how much ground has been covered. It's remarkable enough that this guy went from "Birth of the Cool" in 1949 to "Agharta"/"Pangaea" in 1975 (when he "retired"), but further so that he makes it seem impossible that it could have unfolded any other way. I would probably avoid starting with any of his post-retirement '80's stuff.
