Tusk.

Man; that was a lousy movie. Why is he even trying to make movies? It was so cheap and boring.

The Babadook

Amazing. probably the best movie I've seen this year. What an incredible performance by the lead actress.

Nightcrawler was really good, too. That one's probably my #2 of 2014.

I'm torn between seeing it and remembering the fact that I'm a huge wuss and good horror movies usually ruin my life for three months if I see them in the theater.

Yeah I'm a giant pussy when it comes to the supernatural. Serial killers and mass murderers are chill, but I can't deal with ghosts n' shit.

It's not so scary. Not gory or anything. There is a boogeyman, but it's more of a metaphor for her grief/depression/insanity. Although, I could see someone watching this and seeing it as purely a supernatural demon terrorizing a mother and her son. There's a lot up for interpretation. It is scary in the sense that it makes you think "jesus, it must be terrifying to lose your mind".

i'm calling the ending right now: the mother sits outdoors at an italian bistro, believing the babadook to be dead. from across the patio, the image of a familiar face catches her eye. she sees the babadook sitting with her son at a distant table. she smiles slightly as the babadook lifts his glass of fernet branca for a toast.

I was disappointed by Top Five. It was funny enough, but I was kind of hoping (and was led to believe) that this was kind of Chris Rock's Stardust Memories. It was actually pretty basic. Worth seeing, but basic.
And in not-new movie news: Dogville is really stupendous! I'm always excited when a director I'm kind of 'meh' on surprises me like this. !! That said, I did also really like Melancholia. But this was on another level.
