Enjoying the new Angels & Airwaves, especially this acoustic surprise.
Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.

Re: Albums of 2014
preliminary top ten list (in no order):
Morning Phase - Beck (probably this year's #1)
St. Vincent - St. Vincent (not my favorite of hers, but still better than 95% of what's out there)
After The Disco - Broken Bells (lots of spins this year; pleasurable listen beginning to end)
Midnight Sun- Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger (psychedelic Sean Lennon and his bad-ass, hot girlfriend)
Sound Mirror - Syd Arthur (saw them open for Sean Lennon's band; great new album)
Voices - Phantogram (one of my new favorite bands; fills that Blonde Redhead/Chvrches/YYY void)
The Endless River - Pink Floyd (Very enjoyable, fitting ode/end; obligatory top 10 spot)
Red Metal - Oil Boom (kick-ass new Dallas post-punk band)
Tomorrow's Modern Boxes - Thom Yorke again, not his best, but better than almost everything else)
The Best Day - Thurston Moore (Just now getting used to this one, but I already really dig the vibe)
still in the running/not enough listens:
Fanfare - Jonathan Wilson
Coffins On Io - Kayo Dot
This World - Watter
Sun Structures - Temples
Atomos - A Winged Victory For The Sullen

I laughed.
given that like Tom Petty and some of these albums, it makes sense.

The Hard Girls album A Thousand Surfaces is absolutely excellent. A glorious end-of-year surprise. And one of the better songs on the album is, I kid you not, called Eddie Vedder vs Jack the Ripper. Happily it is a much much better song than that particular title would suggest.

My information says a thousand surfaces came out in June but their latest, in november, is titled "hard"

End of year surprise for me. I snagged this the other day after seeing it listed at #1 on one of the lists zebedee linked to.Strat wrote:My information says a thousand surfaces came out in June but their latest, in november, is titled "hard"Varis wrote:The Hard Girls album A Thousand Surfaces is absolutely excellent. 'bout halfway through this one... it's ok, I guess. I'm just underwhelmed by this year's top picks.Varis wrote:End of year surprise for me. It took me 2 listens but now I'm hooked. Really loving it, especially Sign of the Dune, Die Slow and Eddie Vedder vs Jack the Ripper.Iholdthepain wrote:'bout halfway through this one... it's ok, I guess. threads like this are responsible for most of my new music, though...
check out the Oil Boom, tell me what you think...
They're a psych-punk band from Dallas, getting lots of local buzz right now.

The fact that there's no follow-through on this yet makes me a tad pessimisticIholdthepain wrote:Varis wrote:Oil Boom's Red Metal is queued up and good to go. See you on the other side.Varis wrote:I'll do this thing and report back.
