It was a pretty massive left turn at the time. From what they were doing and what was expected of them.

musically? like I said, I can completely see that as far as promotion/presentation goes, but not with the music, it sounds like pearl jam.

Sometimes? In my tree? Who you are? Smile? Off he goes? Around the bend?

I dont think any of that sounded like pearl jam at the time.

after having songs like black, oceans, daughter, indifference, nothingman, and betterman, i'd say around the bend, who you are, off he goes and sometimes weren't entirely unlike anything. I'd say smile and in my tree are very much like a number of prior songs. For me the biggest departure from the beaten path on that album was Present Tense.

Coach wrote:Why would you want Of the Earth on this record? It's a great tune, but we have plenty of live copies of it - having a familiar tune on a new record doesn't seem to make sense. (I know it's happened before).

Release it as an EP maybe, and fix that somewhat awkward portion when the jam kicks in. Doesn't seem to flow with the tune. Just sayin'
Yea, I can understand that thought process but basically (1) I'd like to have a studio version of this and (2) more importantly, if I see Of the Earth on the tracklist for this album that might give me a little hope for the direction of this new album, as opposed to worrying about whether the band have decided to take the "Hey, let's just use all our 'punchy' songs and make another album like Backspacer" direction.

I really think the end of Of The Earth would be a nice tie in-segue to this trippy sort of vibe the speak of. Could could extend that outro and tie into other music pieces throughout the record.

They wont do it though.

well we know they like phillip glass's metamorphosis:

of the earth - part 1
of the earth - part 2
of the earth - part 3
of the earth - part 4

If No Code had followed Vs, it would've been a huge departure. Vitalogy bridges those albums nicely.

i see that, good point. and i would add merkinball to that "birdge" as well. which got me thinking, every album (except maybe vs.) would be a left turn without the album immediately prior.

Backspacer was rather a left turn. I wonder if this one will be its dark evil twin?

This is the album that will once and for all settle the "Do these guys still give a shit?" argument.

This is disappointing, especially since most the people that have read it responded with "Great, love No Code, CAN'T WAIT!"

Here comes one of those asshole posts about what I want the new album to be (and it ties in with Of The Earth):

Of the Earth being on the album would reinforce my hope that they're going for something bigger than just a hodgepodge of songs that sound like Pearl Jam, i.e., punky number, a few ballads, mid-tempo rockers, waves, oceans, etc. I'm looking for something more ethereal - a vibe, a tone, a feeling - ideas with room to breathe and an adventurous sense of possibility.

In short, I'm looking for Pink Floyd. And I wouldn't be looking for it if I didn't think they had it in 'em. Essentially, what Binaural should have been until they shit their collective pants and wrestled the reigns from Tchad Blake in order to take Brendan O'Brien's familiar life preserver.

I want Sleight of Hand on steroids. With some nice melodies.

But, fuck me. It's not about me. Unless, of course, Ed is reading this post and feels the clearing shock of enlightenment. In that case, Uncle Edward, read this post to your bandmates. And get Jack Irons on the phone.

There is nothing assholely about this post and being honest about what you want from the album is better than the canned trolling in most threads. Plus, I would dare to say a majority of long time fans feel this way. I want a logical follow-on to Binaural, not another Backspacer.
