Could Harbaugh be a dark horse candidate in Chicago? He did play QB there, after all. Not likely, I know, but I'm just trying to think of as many scenarios that don't involve the Raiders as possible.

I don't think he's a dark horse, coming from a Bears fan. His name has been thrown around a lot over the last couple months. I'd be cool with it.

I would too, he's got the fire the team needs. But, I think his family's pretty settled in the Bay Area. A ton of money, power, and an easy commute would be a pretty hard deal for him to turn down.

Interesting. I've never once heard Harbaugh's name connected to the Chicago job more than the general "what if" or "wouldn't it be nice?".

In recent weeks, I haven't NOT heard Harbaugh's name attached to any current or possible HC job opening at both the amateur and pro level.

Despite this, and despite me wanting him to take the job, all this talk of Jim Harbaugh leaving NFL coaching-gig offers on the table to go coach Michigan is beyond me. He'll get just as much money coaching in the NFL, which is considered the pinnacle of a coach's career. Why would any coach in his right mind walk into a situation where coaching takes up about 5% of your time, with the other 95% consumed by recruiting.

I would be shocked if Harbaugh took the Michigan job.

I agree. why in the world would you want to spend so much time sitting in the living rooms of kids parents and having to kiss the ass of a 17 year old at this
point in your career

The head coach rarely goes on home visits anymore. Especially since there are recruiting coordinators now. Maybe 3-5 times a year? Some coaches who are more hands on might go on like 10. I agree though why go through all the NCAA BS and worry about Timmy and Tommy going to class and not knocking up a Booster's daughter and just focus on football. The Bears, Dolphins, Raiders and Jets will all try and sign him. I could see an NFL team going after him and giving him some say in player personnel. On the flip side though in college you have essentially 100% say in player personnel.

He only went to Michigan out of High School because Stanford had Elway. He grew up wanting to go to Stanford. Money talks though and Harbaugh has leverage. If SF fires him it would be stupid. Yes a down year this year but he just made 3 straight NFC title games. The NFL is so dumb sometimes.

And this is why I think you can't (or at least shouldn't) rule out the college route with Harbaugh, even if it isn't Michigan. It appears that the source of Harbaugh's enmity with the Niners is clashing with Trent Baalke on personnel issues. If you're going to do that you belong in college, where having 100% is the norm. Having suffered through some terrible personnel decisions of the end of the Mike Shanahan era, I think only a exceptional talent like Bill Belichick can wear both hats effectively (and surprise, he's the only one that does today).

Unfortunately, the only team that I think is crazy enough to give Harbaugh that kind of power is the Raiders. And if that happens, I'll just have to cross my fingers that he makes a bunch of personnel blunders, because he's one hell of a coach.

He is a damn good coach. Look no further than what he did at Stanford. Bill Walsh could not win there.

Adam Schefter

Just now · .

49ers HC Jim Harbaugh’s family and friends have been encouraging him to take the Michigan HC job, but he is torn because his heart is in the NFL, per sources close to the situation.
Harbaugh first would like to see what head coaching opportunities come available – and he is likely to be a top choice for a handful of teams – before getting back to Michigan with an answer, per sources.
Harbaugh also is aware of the fact that Michigan might not be able to wait for him, especially when it might not even land the coach who is believed to be the school’s top choice. Plus, college football recruiting is in full swing, and the longer a school waits, the more of a disadvantage it can be. It leaves both sides, Michigan and Harbaugh, in a tough and delicate spot, even though they have mutual interest in each other, per sources.
Harbaugh would like to finish coaching this season, go through the players’ getaway day on Monday, Dec. 29, and then make his decision as quickly as possible. As another source said, Harbaugh’s agent, Dave Dunn, already “has a good sense of realistic NFL options already.”
But as one Michigan source wondered Friday, “If he wants to stay in the NFL, who will pay him $8 million per year?”, an indication that Michigan is prepared to go hard after Harbaugh.
There is an undisputed emotional connection for Harbaugh, who played at Michigan, is an iconic figure there, and has been hearing from family and friends about returning as the prodigal son. Harbaugh’s father, Jack, is influential with his son and he has made it known that he likes and admires Michigan’s interim athletic director, Jim Hackett, whom he got to know in the mid 1970s, when he was coaching the defensive backs at Michigan while Hackett was playing center at the school.
Harbaugh’s wife also is said to be open and on board to him going back to Ann Arbor if that’s what he wants, per sources.
While some have pointed out that recruiting would be a challenge, it is one that does not concern Harbaugh, per sources. Harbaugh believes he has successfully recruited before and he would do so again if he returned to college.
But his family and friends have voiced their opinions to Harbaugh, and made it known that it would be an ideal match. Now, likely by the end of the month, Harbaugh must make the decision that will shape his professional and personal life for years to come.

The problem with Schefters report is that it references recruiting as a reason why Michigan may need to wait... It's kinda a recruiting dead period right now, and will be straight through the majority of bowl season. He's reporting to report, and realistically Michigan probably wont fill its head coaching job until jim harbaugh has been hired elsewhere.

That's absolutely right but wouldn't he also need to be fired first or is his 49ers contract over in a week?

If he was really free to go time is of the essence for college right now. Especially when trying to rebuild Michigan
