Oil Boom's Red Metal is queued up and good to go. See you on the other side.
The fact that there's no follow-through on this yet makes me a tad pessimistic :?
I'll have to give it another go. I listened at work and things have been kinda mad there this past week. Nothing jumped out and grabbed me on first listen though, and I'm often a fan of this sort of stuff.

We'll see after round #2.

Oil Boom - Red Metal

I like the start off of 45 Revolutions Per Minute, it chugs along at a fair clip. Not sold on the vocalist - he seems to be playing it a bit 'safe' for my tastes. This is a decent enough middle-of-the-road rocker.

Gotta say I'm a big fan of the title of track #2 - Mid-Range Jumper - I used to have a deadly one back in the day. The song's just OK though.

I dunno, I can't be bothered thinking up things to say on a track-by-track basis. In the end this album is just kinda blah for me. There's nothing that jumps up and grabs me and the hooks just don't seem to be there to my ears. There's a lot of people out there who do similar stuff better. For instance, I checked out the 2014 album from the brilliantly named Aussie band "King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard" that occupies a similar musical orbit, and enjoyed that far more.

I have a suspicion that these guys would be far better to see live than on disc. They just seem to be a bit flat here.

Oh well, I tried.

It IS safe, but in a car ride with the girls, I s'pose safe is good. I like that it has some good musical and vocal hooks that make me move. Honestly, I'm probably a bit 'hometown' biased, and I have heard that they're great live.

I'm not asking anyone for a track-by-track synopsis... In this age of music accessibility, I love threads like this much more than the blogs and podcasts. I just like the sharing of ideas... It makes for some good scavenger-huntin'. I wouldn't have known about albums such as Atomos, This World, or Fanfare if not for this thread, and I really dig them now.

I'll check out the King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard if I can find it.

Oddments - King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard

The beginning and ending, are pretty damn annoying... it was otherwise a decent listen. I'll probably give it another go, skipping the first and last tracks. It does lose some points for being kinda hit-and-miss throughout. I'm one of those dinosaurs who actually likes an album that flows well together, rather than simply a collection of songs.

Sounds nothing like Oil Boom, though, and not nearly as catchy... IMO.

Thanks for playing, V. ;)

The King Gizzard crew were a band thrown together at a party who sort of stuck I believe - it is a bit of an up and down listen.

I know you weren't after a track-by-track synopsis, I just found myself starting to type one for some reason. I must be missing reviewing the 'Secret Mixtapes' or something!

I agree, this is a great thread for discovery. I still think that Kiasmos's self titled album from this year is one of the best things I've heard this year, go and check it out.

I'm always happy to play!

My favorite Aussie record had a killer Gary Numan cover.

It took a little time and a lot of pot, but I finally got into the groove of Kiasmo's s/t... it's a cool soundscape/instrumental, but not top ten material. I'm really digging a couple of your posts, though. Atomos is very good, and Watter's This World will place in my top ten, or at least get an honorable mention...

Birds in Hell wrote:Alright, here's a list.

1. Thurston Moore - 'The Best Day'
2. Bohren & der Club of Gore - 'Piano Nights'
3. The Nels Cline Singers - 'Macroscope'
4. Sun Kil Moon - 'Benji'
5. Wrekmeister Harmonies - 'Then It All Came Down'
6. Brian Reitzell - 'Watch Dogs'
7. Shellac - 'Dude Incredible'
8. Harold Budd - 'Jane 21-21'
9. Earth - 'Primitive & Deadly'
10. Wolves in the Throne Room - 'Celestite'
Earth in, AC/DC out.

Chalk it up to a moment of over-exuberance in the wake of reading about how hard Malcolm Young worked to keep it together during their last world tour in defiance of his health issues. Heart-swelling stuff but the Earth album is definitely better, even if I still can't warm to the songs with Lanegan.

That said, this remains true:

The only way to go right there.

Glad you liked some of that stuff.

Nearly done closing down my office for Christmas and moving all my shit to another city. These last few months have been Epic.

*Edit* And gave Accadacca a spin spenno, it went down surprisingly well. Never stray from the formula, the ACDC credo. That's ok though, I value consistency.

I had never heard of them until I saw them open for Ty Segall. They blew me away live.

I also discovered them through Ty. I heard him cover Fire On The Mountain and was hooked.
