Moonlander - Stone Gossard

When a band is but a fraction of Pearl Jam, but they aren't zero Pearl Jam.

Cool.

Turns out I have Bayleaf on my hard drive so I must have heard it before. I'll give it a blast sometime soon.

This has just happened to me for the 5th time in two years ...

"Man, everyone really likes Bayleaf. Maybe I should listen to it again. I don't really remember it."

Load it up. Hit play.

0:15:03

"Oh yeah, I forgot how much I hate this album. Nevermind."

Play Frightened Rabbit and/or The Black Keys.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

Yeah, I really loved Bayleaf. Just as a weird sorta thing, I remember I was living in Albany at the time, and the release date of this album was 9/11/01. I remember just being totally stunned by the news and the only thing I could do to take my head away was to go to the local record store and pick this up that morning.

Edit: Additional thought: Moonlander made me initially think on the moonwalk, which made me think of the fact that all Stone can really do on stage is the duck stomp, which in turn made me feel like letting him know that should be the album title - Duckstomp.

I've really fucking tried to like this album ... repeatedly. I wish I could put my dislike into better terms, but I can't. I just really dislike listening to that album.

... and now I'm gonna buy Moonraper and feel the same way for another 10 years.

According to iTunes I've played Bayleaf 3 times and I can't for the life of me remember a single song from it. I guess I didn't really rate it that highly either, but those 2 songs posted above were enjoyable enough.

Yeah, according to Last.fm I've only played it once before. I really need to give this more spins.

I'm assuming this album will be full of the amazingly brilliant songs Ed has snubbed over the past decade :-)

Let me take a quick stab at what Moonlander will mean...a vehicle for jaded Pearl Jam fans to rip on the new album when it comes and talk about how much better this one is even if Stone does nothing more than record himself pooping in a shoebox. So much to look forward to!

I don't think Stone poops anymore. He had a colostomy to further reduce his carbon footprint.

Actually, he would poop on his lawn to reduce the carbon footprint, which brings an entirely new meaning to "Moonlander". This is why I say "you're welcome" to my neighbors every time my dog leaves them a Moonlander on their property.

My taste is pretty good, except for a slight Madonna obsession. I would explain why I don't like it, but your post doesn't seem to call for debate.
Is this like the part where they put the cape on James Brown and we have to beg him to come back?
I have listened to Bayleaf a couple of times since my initial post in this thread and have to admit it's better than I remembered.
While I find the vocal delivery pretty terrible and many of the lyrics clunky, the guitars and song structures are pretty goddamn interesting.
While I doubt it will get any serious time in my rotation, it'll get an occasional listen.
I stand corrected.

I will say this about Bayleaf - if some dude on the street (because in these scenarios random people on the street stop me and ask my personal opinion on all things Pearl Jam related) stopped me and said "I'm interested in listening to some music done by Pearl Jam members outside of the context of this band, what do you recommend?" I would say the Eddie Vedder solo albums, Mad Season, and Bayleaf are the only truly truly essentials. The rest, to me, are variations of good to excellent to terrible.
