Re: The ***OFFICIAL*** You're FIRED! Thread
Granted Harbaugh to Michigan seems like a done deal, can somebody else who remembers his time in Chicago shed some light on something for me.
I've also heard a lot of "Harbaugh to the Bears" suggestions over the past week, but didn't he leave the organization on VERY bad terms as a player? This is just a case of people being like "Uh, he played for them once OH MY GOD HE SHOULD COACH THERE!" right? Am I misremembering his exit? Wasn't the sentiment that Ditka really jerked him around to the extent that it totally fucked up his development and that the Bears were all too eager to toss him onto the trash heap when Erik Kramer became available?

Why would Harbaugh go to the Bears when he can coach a third-tier program in a dying conference?

Rex and Rob to the Bears makes sense. Rex is a decent coach. The GM in NY was awful.Green Habit wrote:I have to think he'll be joining Rex in the unemployment line soon.BigRedLedbetter wrote:Rex getting fired makes this guy sad........

Leaving the NFL to coach at big name schools that were once powerhouses but have fallen on incredibly rough times never works out well.turned2black wrote:Why would Harbaugh go to the Bears when he can coach a third-tier program in a dying conference?

Also, the Big 10 will continue to struggle to get recruits. Other than Ohio State, no Big 10 school was in the top 20 last year.

I dunno, I think Harbaugh is going to flourish at Michigan. There's not a single head coach in the NCAA who has the resume of NFL coaching success that he has. Kids are going to want to play for him for that reason alone. I would expect them to become one of the top destinations for elite talent over the next few seasons.

From what I remember he didn't leave the team on bad terms, just Ditka. They had a pretty volatile relationship. Ditka never wanted the Bears to draft him, but they did anyway. He was almost always behind Mike Tomczak (who he also didn't get along with) on the depth chart, though they did bounce back and forth a little. He was pretty well liked because he was a very gritty player.Lament wrote:Granted Harbaugh to Michigan seems like a done deal, can somebody else who remembers his time in Chicago shed some light on something for me.

I think Bears fans recognize he's a very good coach, and are a bit nostalgic (20 plus years ago

Do you think Peter Tom Willis would take the job?EJ wrote:I think Bears fans recognize he's a very good coach, and are a bit nostalgic (20 plus years ago) about the last era where the Bears were really the dominant team in that division. Thus, the hopeful rumors.

How could a guy with 3 first names not take the job? If he doesn't Will "Der" Furrer might though.Lament wrote:Do you think Peter Tom Willis would take the job?EJ wrote:I think Bears fans recognize he's a very good coach, and are a bit nostalgic (20 plus years ago) about the last era where the Bears were really the dominant team in that division. You know that new Burger King commercial where they have the store all decorated like it's the 70s and stuff?
I think the best option for the Bears at this point is to de-renovate Soldier Field to how it looked in 1985, populate it with extras dressed in 80s attire, and let fans just sit around talking about 1985 for three hours every Sunday while the current Bears get pummeled.

I agree with this. Teams like Wisconsin and Minnesota could make some noise, but it's very easy to see the Big Ten revert to what it was like when Bo and Woody were sparring.Lament wrote:I dunno, I think Harbaugh is going to flourish at Michigan. Good idea. That or just get some fog machines and smother the place like when they beat the Eagles in the 1988 fogbowl playoff game.

Michigan only has 12 open spots for recruitment this off-season. Going to be hard for him to make an impact the first year or so.
