Finally got around to watching this. It was ok. Had some moments. A lot of missed opportunities. A lot of the best parts in the book were raced through to get to the new stuff that didn't really add much. Changes to the Bilbo and Smaug parts sucked all the tension out. I did like the added Gandalf stuff though.

Finally got around to watching this. It was okay, better than the first.

For those of you who saw it in 60 fps, did it look less cartoony in that format?

This just in...there's a book, more like a compilation, of letters from Tolkien, imaginatively called 'the letters of JRR Tolkien' and in letter 25 he actually says Smaug is pronounced Smaug (smouugg as in ouch), not Smaug as in Smog/Smawg etc.

the more you know.

The treasure is way over the top. It would cause massive inflation if put in circulation.

The EE seems to include Gandalf meeting Thorins father who was captive at Dol Goldur (he had one of the three dwarven rings) and also we'll see him give Gandalf the key to Erebor..which is screwed up because he gives that to Gandalf before any of this happens and then Gandalf gives it to Thorin..unless it's yet another flashback..

Okay, rewatched this for the first time. i enjoyed it, but I wish it was more fun. The fat Ranga dwarf during the barrel scene had my kids in stitches, and we all laughed at Legolas' comment about Gimli. More of that would have been welcome. I like Tauriel, but I hate her thing with Kili. Fuck off.

What does the extended edition bring to the table?

Battle tomorrow maybe.

PS. The Bard looks way too much like Orlando Bloom. It's weird.

Agreed..they purposefully set out to make him look like Bloom i think..(the actor actually has blue eyes, not brown)

Got the extended edition for xmas..couldnt really tell you specifics, lot of scenes are given more time (Beorn's house gets more screen time). But the rest is really subtle.

Not surprisingly though, the extra time does add to the overall.
Not going to watch with the commentary, on AUJ it was just PJ and Boyens making excuses for the entire length. Nothing of value in there at all, left me quite pissed cos the multiple commentaries on the LOTR films were brilliant and really did add a lot, each one of them.

This is on TNT right now. I can't believe the dwarves floating down the river in barrels scene made it to the final cut
