Got the extended editions of Desolation of Smaug for a present. Watching the extras yesterday and its crystal clear the whole focus went on GGI. theres at least two sections where they go to an actual location with stunning mountains just behind them, but massive green screens are put up to block them mountains out so others can be GGI'd in later..and three or four crew guys on camera, baffled that they are doing it this way..The cast do mention the frustration of the green screen environment. (Gandalf and Beorn almost entirely shot alone working in a GS environment..

Jackson spends a lot of time in the extras championing the CGI or going 'we'll just do it with CGI'.
Clearly the move away from the Practical effects that are actually built like in LOTR has something to do with their new backers (MGM/Warner).

Does anyone know does the HFR thing apply to the dvds or blurays of these films? it does look kind of different..(i got the dvds)

theres footage of a heads of production meeting where Jackson says he wants Radagast to have a sled pulled by rabbits..he elaborates a little..and theres nothing but horror and shock on all the unit heads faces....yet nobody objects...

this is the same fear of the boss lead to the ruin of the Star wars prequels...

if only anyone had spoken up calling it a terrible idea..

this is shocking on all parts, heres the actual footage of the meeting..
they all think hes joking!!

Orcs riding giant dogs - fine
Elves riding war moose - fine
Armored dwarves riding armored pigs - fine
Everyone carried around by flying Eagles - fine
Hippie Wizard riding sleigh pulled by giant rabbits - not okay in this children's story

Fair point. I think the choice of actor and the portrayal he gave is the problem..

He's a Maia..an angel in effect..the depiction given is ridiculous.

i really wish the movie ended with some drumbeat or loud music because it was dead quiet and it was awkward walking out.

This was fine. The good and bad have been discussed already. My favorite aspect of the whole trilogy was Martin Freeman. He is so great in everything he does. Probably my favorite actor of all time.

Hero of the 6 movie series=Big fucking birds.

I saw this movie this very afternoon, and my only real memory of it is a basic enjoyment. _ don't know if I've ever seen such an in-one-ear-out-the-other movie.

That's a pretty much perfect take on this film.

There's a spinoff movie we'd all go see :)

In a weird Blackadder/Baldric kind of way, Alfrid might just be genius comedy :)

what's that coming over the hill...$$$$$$

I watched the LOTR trilogy this week, and while i've enjoyed these hobbit films, it's easy to forget just how spectacularly good the LOTR films are.

Yep.

Wonder if they'll stand the test of time? as in will they still be getting shown on tv in 50 years?
i like to think they will.

Unless they've been remade by then. It's Tolkien's birthday today.
