You should love my kid's band then. They all work real jobs and are as independant as you can be. The built their own studio, record, engineer, play all instruments and produce their music themselves and haven't made a cent yet. The sell t-shirts that they can't hope to make money on because they'd rather people have a nice organic t than a couple bucks in their pocket.

I'm fine with that. But Cohen said right off the bat "I'm giving you all I've got, bc I don't know when our paths will cross again". He played for over three hours backed by an impeccable band. Great night.

I think the set was pretty similar to the DVD that came out a few years ago.
I'd love to see him. One of those thoughts that catches me off guard and fills me with sadness is that Leonard Cohen will most probably die in my life time.

But you do know why he came out of retirement, right? He was broke and needed the money.

His manager stole his money while Cohen was in a Buddhist monastery. He started the live circuit again reluctantly but then fell in love with it again. Now he can't stop and more power to him.

Well sometimes keeping it real can go wrong and many of those bands are barely listenable. Some of the indie sing songwriters I've heard him listen to couldn't write an infectious tune to save their lives.
I don't even know where to begin with this. So instead here's an empty post expressing my bafflement.
I'd name the singer/songwriters or groups but I don't even know who they are. A lot of it sounds like it was recorded onto a cassette. I think you really don't have a leg to stand on here. Your response was an easy one, especially since you don't know who I was talking about.
I'll start with the fact that you seem to be suggesting that in order to be considered "good", a tune has to be "infectious", which is troubling for a number of reasons (of the "artistic merit" variety, which I acknowledge has little to do with this conversation). Then there's the logic problem behind the statement "most of the good indie bands make it to the big time"-- this shows a poor understanding of 1- just how much music is being made available in the world, and 2- exactly what the "big time" is (by the very nature of "mainstream", a very slim, very select group of musicians-- so even if your assertion about "infectiousness" is correct, the statistical possibility of that music rising to public awareness is infimal by the sheer amount of music being produced in the world). Lastly, you seem to be ignoring the fact that there's a space carved out in the pop culture landscape for many musicians that are considered "unlistenable" by a big chunk of the population, even if just for novelty value-- see the relative popularity of "fringe acts" like Animal Collective.

Everybody was generalizing things to begin with. It's way to tedious to nitpick everything so yes, I am going to make blanket statements that hold true. Yes there is a ton of music out there. But to suggest that just because someone is getting paid that they don't have integrity is a load of horse shit and that is the bottom line my friend.

That's right. So making music "for a living" and creating moving, powerful, important art aren't mutually exclusive. We all agree on that, right?

Cohen was amazing live. I was at the O2 show that was released on DVD. I was everything I wanted and more.

As for Bob, I love Bob live. You never know what you're going to get and without expectations you're going to get your mind blown. His sets have become too predictable of late though.
Me too, I've seen Bob a few times, and have always enjoyed it. But Leonard just showed so much love towards his band the audience in attendance. Everyone should get a chance to see Cohen.

Absolutely. But, only a very select few can people pull it off properly.

Absolutely. And I'm sure Leonard would be a lovely chap to share a cup of tea. Dylan not so much. I love Dylan's absolute refusal to play the game. But that IS his game. All artists that we are aware of have put themselves out there.

my plan is to get filthy rich whoring myself to anyone with a dollar to give, then use my piles of cash to not give a fuck what anyone thinks while simultaneously living the good life. I can then use that time and money to create my art, but I will only have a small window as I will inevitably become accustomed to my new lifestyle and my art will be destroyed by works about my fucking kids or whatnot.

I'll try not to fall into the PJ trap of getting rich but inexplicably willing to compromise for more and more attention. What the fuck are those guys doing? They're rich! I thought the whole point of being rich was not having to have a boss anymore.

Not exactly my brand, but hey, they seem to be going about it the right way.

Salut. Best of luck.

i saw Green Day last night in Quebec City with my daughter who's a massive fan (she knows their lyrics, even songs from their recent trilogy while i don't even know how their biggest hits go) so i went there with no preconcieved idea, mostly to share some good times with her.

first off, i do enjoy a good pop song when i hear one and this band delivers the goods - maybe to a point of saturation because the songs that aren't "classics" are probably as catchy as any of their hits but i have the impression that what allowed this band to pass the test of time are their two naughties records that pushed the enveloppe and redefined them for a new generation. several song from Uno!/Dos! and Tré! are quite good but you just reach a plateau of crowd pleasers that you just can't transcend with "ordinary" bubblegum punk rockers.

the crowd was sold from the get-go, even if the show was postponed due to Billie Joe's well-known breakdown and ensuing therapy (it was originally scheduled for january 27th). the band's ability to appeal to litterally every age was mind-boggling; there were little kids, a toddler, several people well over 50 but i saw not a single punk in there - kinda funny i thought. Billie Joe, in my opinion, abuses his talent to whip up a crowd. i lost count of his "let's go crazeee!", his calls for handclaps, arm-waving and so on. another thing that annoyed me was his growling calls littered all over the show, addressing the audience to, again, go crazee, being "Québécois", sing along, etc. i mean, i can't imagine anybody enjoying a bootleg because of that - on Boulevard of Broken Dreams (one of my daughter's favorite), the spell was completely broken by his antics, at least for me.

on the other hand, the show is perfectly to the point on the entertainment scale - almost never a dull moment and the guys are quite funny - i was agreeably surprised how much i enjoyed it given the fact that their music is completely hamfisted and that i wasn't familiar with at least half of their setlist. my daughter was ecstatic and she will probably remember it with delight for her whole life - for that alone it was well-worth the very un-punk 68$ tickets.

a comparative + point for Green Day for their apparent concern at reaching for the last fan in the nosebleeds - something that Pearl Jam didn't seem to care about the last time i saw them.

another + point for Jesus of Suburbia. that's an impressive song for a band like GD.

i was also quite pleased that they played Brain Stew which is probably my favorite song of theirs along with Misery (not played).

As I said in The Cure thread, last night's show was one of the best I've ever seen.
