favorite Eddie dylan cover

Post by stip »

What should Eddie play at that upcoming Dylan tribute? Masters of war is generally solid, but his cover of the times they are a changin' is probably my favorite.

I just hope to go no all along the watchtower or forever young.

Property of Jesus or Gotta Serve Somebody.
Not that anyone will, but someone should do something off Tempest.

The only EV Dylan cover I've ever really liked was "Masters of War" -- didn't much care for the acoustic Iraq-era ones, but the '92 version was one of Ed's best vocal performances of that time, and I liked the rock versions from 2006 too. But I shudder to think what his current voice would do to those big, cavernous vowel sounds -- I suspect the addition of syllables would be involved.

Ideally I'd like to see him tackle something fresh, and something a bit less familiar. So far Ed's Dylan-covering repertoire has mostly consisted of rote, unimaginative warhorse-flogging. His "Girl From the North Country" is okay.

Something quiet and retrospective. Something indicative of age and growth and contemplation. But also with a touch of the political and eschewing the overly sentimental. Blowing in the Wind maybe? One More Cup of Coffee? One of those or Tangled Up in Blue.

I'm a fuckwit.

I was looking at the date/time for the Grammy's telecast. Not the tribute. Never mind.

These things usually get shown on PBS a year or so later. I just saw the Springsteen one on there a couple weeks ago, I think from 2013.
