How do people feel about The Eternal? I was listening to it yesterday and really dug it.

I think it's due for a revisit soon, at the time I thought it was easily their weakest album.

yeah it is somewhat forgotten; i liked it when it came out...but for me they reach their peak with Sonic Nurse.

I get it when Moore says they got to a point were everyone knew what the band was going to do.

Yeah, my overarching feeling regarding SY now is that they had a really good run. I don't feel they left anything unsaid.

yeah i guess it is the right thing...to miss them knowing there wasnt anything left.

Also, Moore album and live show seemed a lot more important for him than the last SY show i saw.

Hey VG, wasn't the last time you saw Sonic Youth during that final run of South American shows after K & T had already split? Those must have been some weird shows to see.

How great is this? Really great. Really, really great. To my regret, I saw SY only once - but it was incredible.

yeah, that was the show. It was really weird because their split was official just a couple of months before the show, so i didnt know what to expect really. I loved the show, but their dinamics were weird. I didnt quite get it while i was there, but seeing Thurston a few days ago i realize how different they were...specially when you compare that show with the one i saw in 2000.

A friend of mine, who is younger, said that she tought they sucked live. I couldnt believe her view, but i understand that the lack of chemistry between Moore and Kim was pretty evident and, while it didnt hurt the band, it changed it.

Listening to The Eternal right now after...4 years?

Listened to this again yesterday, still fantastic.

Some great performances of songs from the record here:

From Kim Gordon's new memoir. Re: Courtney Love:

Damn, I'm watching that whole concert right now. It's amazing. Can't believe Kim was 50 years old back then.

I'll buy Kim's book but I'm in kind of in two minds about the whole thing as I really don't want to know even more gory details about her split with Thurston.

I don't think she avoids the gory details based on the extracts I've read.

Word.

Though, I did read (via Stereogum, I think?) that she does manage to omit several details that people wish she hadn't. I don't know.

So, let's get real for a minute. I need to listen to more Sonic Youth. I have Murray Street and A Thousand Leaves. Really love both. I've heard Daydream Nation, but it's been ages since I listed to it front to back (and I don't own it). Of course, I've heard a ton of random songs.

But if I wanted to buy a full album, what album should I get next?

Obvious answer: Get Daydream Nation. If you want something you haven't listened to yet, go with Sister. Sonic Nurse if you want more modern Sonic Youth.

Thanks, fellas.

Since you both mentioned it, I'm gonna load Sonic Nurse onto the ol' Spotify.

Personally, Goo would be the next album I'd steer you towards.

It was their major label debut, has a number of significant singles and is probably their most concise and accessible record (it's also super excellent).
