There's an HD copy of this floating around on the internet, but the bottom of the screen is cropped off to get rid of identifying info...worth it?

so the big lebowski comparisons are spot on
There's a definitely a lot of Lebowski in this. Except that Lebowski is fun to watch (and not incomprehensible on a narrative level).
i think i finally got through lebowski without dozing off like the eighth time i watched it. of course, i was pretty stoned for most if not all of the previous attempts.
it took me about 5 viewings to really appreciate it...still not in my top tier of coens' movies though

No. No movie should ever be watched like that. It hurts me to think about it.

I'm just itching to see it, and the only theater showing it is at the mall...the mall! But I will wait.

My brother mentioned my book in his best man speech and I didn't get a single new sale :-(

And I have a few thousand words of my next book written, but my dissertation takes priority.

I got about as much out of this as I got out of the sole Pynchon novel I've been able to get through (the short one Crying of Lot 49). My views mostly align with what LV and dev are saying, but I didn't hate it. I was happy to sit there for what didn't feel like two and a half hours, but it made no sense.

I was completely flummoxed by it, but early on, the overwrought storyline and it's main characters all being a little to extremely stoned worked as a counterbalance to each other so I just gave up trying to untangle it and enjoyed it as it went along. The payoff probably isnt worth the endless pubic hair like entanglement of the plot but it's a fun ride with some really great performances i thought.

I've heard that you should never get excited for a movie released in January because studios dump all the films they don't have faith in during that month. Based on what some of you guys are saying, this might fall into that category despite the director/other appeals.

I kind of loved this. Seemed very true to Pynchon's vibe and the cast and performances had me laughing throughout. A really colorful, dense and fun movie. Loved the scene about 2/3 of the way through between Waterson and Phoenix. Brolin's scenes were all perfect as well.

Definitely colorful and fun. Dense? Eh, it never really justified its messy execution in my opinion. It absolutely felt like I was viewing a genuine snapshot of that period, but ultimately it tried too hard. What can I say; I find "art" films of this nature with no immediately discernible arc to be an unfulfilling experience. Cool too look at and listen to, but that's about it. Maybe I'm just a philistine. Who knows.

Sounds like the movie is an accurate representation then

Yeah...there is a very good interview of PTA on the WTF podcast about it. And it seems is a very good representation of the book. Its a very very messy book with tons of characters and full of side storys.

I guess the movie is the same, and PTA thought it was a movie to come back to after a while.

Yeah I pretty much knew it would be like that going in so it didn't bother me much. I think it's intended to put you in the same state as Doc, which I could understand many viewers not enjoying. I loved it. And honestly compared to something like trying to read Gravity's Rainbow this was a walk in the park. PTA definitely understood what he was adapting and how it would be difficult to make it come across.
