Only time I can think of something close was in 2006 when Martyball got fired from the Chargers after a 14-2 start, a one and done playoff appearance, and both his coordinators becoming HCs elsewhere. Maybe Elway is being proactive and wants to avoid part of that last part from happening.

Promote Adam Gase before the Niners or someone else nabs him? That's the only thing I can think of other than something real crazy like bringing Shanny back.

Promoting Gase was my first thought too. If they bring in a whole new staff I think that pretty much guarantees Manning retires. Interesting to see how this plays out.

It was apparently Twitter's first thought as well: Gase, Shanahan, and Kubiak are all trending.

it wont be shanahan, contrary to popular belief, he and john are not the best of buds and believe it or not it stems from a simple game of pool from many years ago

Broncos are in a tough place. They have great pieces in place and a quarterback who's good but one I just can't see them winning with. He's far too immobile come playoff time. Peyton has been a great quarterback but at his age, shouldn't the Broncs have been grooming a legitimate replacement.

I know what you mean, but who are they gonna groom that has a shot at being better than him? Denver's best shot is if he comes back healthy enough to be even above average. Which is probable.

And then didn't give him any playing time. Thirty pass attempts in three seasons. That's not grooming, that's drafting and discarding. Over three season the Broncos had more than enough leads at the end of three quarters to have put Osweiler in but it seems Manning's pursuit of records and career achievements was more important.

Come on, playing time in blowouts doesn't really tell us much, because both teams are putting in other second stringers to avoid injuries. And there are plenty of examples of QBs (AJ Feeley, Kevin Kolb) who came in and looked good for a few snaps but utterly sucked as a regular starter. I'm not going to proclaim that Osweiler is the next answer or not, but there's a lot more that goes into that answer behind the scenes.
