Re: The Wire
To me Omar is to the Wire what GOB is to Arrested Development. A great character for sure, and a pretty easy one to latch on to in order to "get into" the show. But the more you watch it, you start to appreciate other characters quite a bit more. Omar (and GOB) aren't any worse than they were initially, it's just that you start to realize more and more how great the other characters are, so Omar and GOB get surpassed.

Re: The Wire
i was kidding. my least favorite character is actually nick sobotka. ziggy is irritating as hell, but i think his arc capably illustrated what happens to characters who do not embody the requisite traits of their institutions. kind of like mcnulty, except it wasn't protracted over five seasons.

Re: The Wire
Omar has also gotten to the point where he is The Wire, meaning his character is basically an expression of the series as a whole. If you want to understand the "rules" underpinning the entire series, they're basically all summed up in this one character (he's full of contradictions, not what he appears to be on the surface, his "code"). So many people call him the series' "best character" but I feel like they're just reacting to the fact that when you realize The Wire is a special piece of art, it's around the same time that Omar's layers start to get peeled back. As Skitch is saying, it kinda blinds you to the fact that there are other subtle characterizations of other people that are more intriguing and ambiguous.@SkitchP wrote:To me Omar is to the Wire what GOB is to Arrested Development. Who wants to resurrect the AD thread so we can list our favorite characters (GOB excluded)?

I haven't watched it in so long, it's going to take a while to come up with a list. Lupe's Uncle is in there.@SkitchP wrote:we're waiting, ST.

Best moment of season two so far: Frank Sobotka's enraged history of union busters 1960 to present.

Re: The Wire
I respect the analysis of Omar, but to me he is pretty much king of the hill. I'll randomly think of the ltitle exchange between him and Stringer in the courtroom and laugh my ass off. One of the best TV moments ever.

I don't feel Carver gets enough love. I think his character arc is pretty good from where he starts in s1, and ends in s5.

Re: The Wire
Carver's overall arc is really good, but I feel like you have to watch the series a few times over to appreciate it.
