This is a pretty dependable rule of thumb.

there should be a caveat when you're joking about pop culture/art, LV, because sometimes people might not be able to tell. for example, a lot of people still think you were serious when you said you liked the phantom menace.

Nothing engaging about the arrangement or lyrics. There's an attempt at some kind of teeth grinding, manic energy, but it all comes off whiny and underwater sounding.

Removing it makes No Code a better record. It doesn't add anything to album, but instead halts a pretty fantastic momentum.
I feel like you see the positive aspects, but don't fully appreciate them for what they are. Habit is perfectly placed on No Code, whether it breaks any perceived momentum or not.
There's nowhere else on the album I'd put the song, true. But by taking it off entirely, it makes for a better listen. Even better, would be putting All Night on in its place.

All Night is a fantastic song, but I'm not replacing Habit.

It would be a challenge to find spots for the several great No Code era songs that didn't make the cut. I'd like to see some attempts at it though.

Excellent description. I like that. Another album I'd describe that way is Tom Waits' Bone Machine. Bone Machine and Vitalogy are my two favorite album evah.

Poetry, boo. It's descriptive and evocative in a way that I relate to and feels accurate. That's all that matters.

This thread made me realize that "Habit" is the best song on No Code.

Speaking underwater & steam, why does No Code sound so much better, clarity wise, than the others?
