This is a pretty dependable rule of thumb.tommymtcom wrote:Do they sound anything like Bruce Springsteen? If so I am not interested.

there should be a caveat when you're joking about pop culture/art, LV, because sometimes people might not be able to tell. for example, a lot of people still think you were serious when you said you liked the phantom menace.

Re: Rank The Pearl Jam Catalog
There's nowhere else on the album I'd put the song, true. But by taking it off entirely, it makes for a better listen. Even better, would be putting All Night on in its place.Kaius wrote:I feel like you see the positive aspects, but don't fully appreciate them for what they are. Habit is perfectly placed on No Code, whether it breaks any perceived momentum or not.durdencommatyler wrote:I don't like anything about it except Ed's delivery. It's grating and unrewarding. It's boring and shopworn. It's aggressive yet meandering. Nothing engaging about the arrangement or lyrics. There's an attempt at some kind of teeth grinding, manic energy, but it all comes off whiny and underwater sounding.
Removing it makes No Code a better record. It doesn't add anything to album, but instead halts a pretty fantastic momentum.

All Night is a fantastic song, but I'm not replacing Habit.
It would be a challenge to find spots for the several great No Code era songs that didn't make the cut. I'd like to see some attempts at it though.

Excellent description. I like that. Another album I'd describe that way is Tom Waits' Bone Machine. Bone Machine and Vitalogy are my two favorite album evah.Alex wrote:i've always thought vitalogy sounded like it was mired in steam, like the songs can only see about two or three feet ahead of them

Poetry, boo. It's descriptive and evocative in a way that I relate to and feels accurate. That's all that matters.Alex wrote:would you care to explain what it means? i just thought it sounded like i knew what i was talking about.durdencommatyler wrote:Excellent description. I like that. This thread made me realize that "Habit" is the best song on No Code.

Speaking underwater & steam, why does No Code sound so much better, clarity wise, than the others?
