Well yeah, it's pretty great. Is it a sampled loop? Possibly I can't remember. It's very well played though, and the song suits the loop.

Um, no, not just because it's Dave. The song is a drone which rises "like a wave" but remains on the same simple chord progression throughout, so because it's a drone, the "droning" looped drums suit the intent. They're tribal drums, which are by nature repetitive and trance-like.
Actually i'm all Jack here, did you hear some 95 japan(?) version , with a drum solo?

No I haven't heard that. You asked about Dave, right?
The other thing is, that WMA drum loop get thicker and thicker throughout the song, as other drum loops are layered on top of it. It becomes a big wall of drum tracks, which is also really cool. They continued this influence on "Who You Are" with Jack.

Yeah, the drums have sounded pretty live to my ears, the first time i heard wma i thought it's all live.
And actually i've never catch who you are album version drums, maybe thats just beyond me.
I like Matt but I hate that they're listing "Given to Fly" as a reason to love him. Jack's version is full of character and nuance, Matt just flattens it out.

i thought that to be weird as well. however, id be interested in hearing Cameron record a studio take on it and hear some of the stuff that is often lost in live translation.
but yes, overall, Jack Irons is so beautiful on that track.

I wasn't aware of that, Spenno. It really is a placeholder. A demo beat, if you will. Matt isn't loose enough for a lot of Jack's material. Matt has his strengths, he also has his weaknesses.
I can't remember where, but there's an interview (which I'm sure I'm seriously paraphrasing) where Matt explained one of his biggest challenges coming into Pearl Jam has been adjusting his style to an environment where everything has to be subservient to the vocal, something that wasn't necessarily the case in Soundgarden or his other projects.
If that's the vibe the band has given him, and it's not hard to hear that his drumming for Pearl Jam seems a lot less intricate now than it was in 1998-2000, I think they're dead wrong. I'd love to see him cut loose more within the confines of Pearl Jam - both Abbruzzese's and Irons's playing had a significant impact on the overall sound of the band during their tenure behind the drums, I don't see any reason why that had to change for Matt (or had to after a while, anyway).

I remember that article and he definitely said that. I dont think thats the band telling him to drum that way i just think thats the nature of their writing. Irons and Dave A's drums were generally based around the rise and fall of the vocals. Its more standard song writing than Soundgarden. Matt holds back but I dont think he's approaching it differently. More often than not he just does not put his own stamp on it. At least not on the past 3 records or so but that may have more to do with the quality of the song in general.
