Neither of the B-sides belong anywhere near this record.
This. I think it's one of the most well-tracked albums I've heard in a long time (along with ...Like Clockwork). Of course it helps that there's absolutely no filler :nice:

I too would apply the words of "Just the Way You Are" to this LP.

So I did some resequencing and this album is working a lot better for me now. I still think it's their weakest, but it feels more energetic and compelling in this incarnation.

1. Bury Our Friends
2. No Cities to Love
3. Gimme Love
4. Fangless
5. Surface Envy
6. A New Wave
7. Hey Darling
8. No Anthems
9. Fade
10. Price Tag

I gotta check out those B-sides, though, because, honestly, I think "Fade" seems pretty out of place on this album.

Agh, even with the resequencing, I still don't know. I think this album's poppiness factor is what's turning me off. It's Sleater-Kinney by way of Wild Flag and St. Vincent. I much want my S-K to rock harder.

I was thinking about the Wild Flag album today. I like Future Crimes, Winter Pair, and maybe even Im In Love With the Whole World (But Not You) more than most of the Carrie stuff off the new SK album, BUT, I love the Corin stuff 100% more than any of the non Carrie tracks from WF. Which is what really held WF back, I just could not get into the Mary songs at all.

the main reason I wanted to re-track it, was because the Carrie songs were all top heavy (in the squence) and Corins BEST songs were also in the first half, which made the 2nd half of the album drag a bit for me. So by moving Price Tag and Surface Envy down, It totally improves the 2nd half of the album for me.

Bury Our Friends back to back with No Cities To Love is fun too. Could see that happening a lot live.

one last thought, I LOVE that Carries new found fame from Portlandia seems to be getting SK a lot more attention this go around. I read somewhere how Portlandia has a avg of 5 million viewers per episode, SK hasnt even sold 1 million albums total. If Portlandia brings more listeners to the party im all for it.

Retracking an album that's barely been out a week seems completely counterintuitive to me.

are you listening to it on vinyl or CD? obviously vinyl ya cant retrack, but I can see this flowing a lot better listening to it on vinyl where ya get that break to flip sides. Moving Surface Envy and Price Tag to the end on the CD just really makes the second half work better for me.

I'm listening via my computer.

Flipping the vinyl between A New Wave and No Anthems (as per the actual vinyl release) seems like a fine sequencing choice by the band.

on the CD, A New Wave doesnt even fully fade out, it slowly fades out but ends before it actually fades OUT, and No Anthems starts right up with no break in sound at all.

I really think A New Wave should have opened, because of the lyric
"no one here is taking notice, No outline will ever hold us. Its not a new wave, its just you and me"

Its almost like their saying they were never popular, they could never be defined, now their back after a break, but its not a new begining, its still just SK.

its weird seeing Carrie trying to look all hard in every band photo after seeing Portlandia. What a dope.

The more I listen to and think about this album, the less I like it. :shake:

Listening to The Woods right now, which just makes this new one feel downright embarassing.

yea i'm a little worrying about how her portlandia/amex commercial fame is going to affect the band (and their fanbase) going forward. so far, it doesn't seem to have negatively affected the music, but if i see andy samberg near me at a show, he might catch an elbow or two.

This album doesn't really gain traction for me until Surface Envy.
