Re: Queens of the Stone Age | …Like Clockwork [4 June]
Ok let´s begin:
Queens Of The Stone Age:
i began to appreciate this record after i heard it on vinyl..i dont know why, but before that i didnt quite like these collection of songs.
The album feels like a natural progression from Kyuss, as if Josh needed to keep with the riff rock and stoner feel but also needed to make more sutil and beautiful music without stepping to far away from the formula of "robotic riffs" as he calls them.
I think its an early statement on how talented Homme is, being that he sings, plays guitar and bass in all songs.
Upside down:
I Was a teenage hand model: i like the intro and the title is great...but its one of the songs i care the less in the album.
Give the mule what he wants: cool intro, cool guitars...somewhat repetitive and boring.
You cant quit me baby: The bass intro is amazing...and Josh vocals too...I like how the guitar cames in after a long time without anything more than bass and drums at the 2.22" mark...the end is pure bliss with Josh´s trademark guitar solo...and the speed at the end is great too..reminded me of an Alice in chains´s song from Tripod.
Hispanic Impressions: Alfredo Hernandez shines here, and it sounds like the quintassential QOTSA song...i love how the guitar enters and goes away almost unnoticed...the guitars riffs are pretty heavy and cool too.
Mexicola: How cool is that bass? guess its fare to call this one an early classic. Another great Hernandez take, and feels like the Kyuss element is more present here than in the whole record...not only in the theme, but in the stoner feel and specially in how the songs builds. Really heavy -muscular- ending.
How to handle a rope: this one could be in Lullabies..without a problem. The guitar riff is 100% QOTSA. Cool solo at the end.
Walking in the sidewalks: Feels like a Song of the deaf type of song, the bass and drums are doing that heavy circular thing is a QOTSA classic.
Its cool but too repetitive,a weakness of future QOTSA compositions.
You would know: this ones screams for Lanegan´s vocals...the guitars and bass are amazing, without being too heavy, the song feels sick enough, like an Era Vulgaris composition.
If Only: the "pop" song from the record, in a QOTSA sense, of course. The main riff is great and, actually there is a chorus to sing! ...i dont know why Josh doesnt play this one often live, its a great song and it works as a "single" for the whole album. Its up there with some of his best work like No one knows or The lost art of keeping a secret. Also, the solo...short and intense.
Avon: fuck yeah!! speed motherfucker!! one of the most iconic Homme compositions from this era...feels like a kyuss leftover or something like that, specially in the intro of the song. Homme vocals are good enough but i feel this one should have been a Lanegan song. Love the solo, its such a good little solo...Homme is great at this stuff.
Regular John: what a cool way to start an album. The guitars are incredible here, even if the drums could or should have been louder and heavier...Josh vocals are great. Loving the chorus too...this one could have been in Songs for the deaf too.
A great debut album...its rare for me to consider this one as the first QOTSA record, sounds like a solo album from Josh with some Kyuss ideas from before, but its also contains some of the trademarks of another records from this band.

Re: Queens of the Stone Age | …Like Clockwork [4 June]
I'm on a total QOTSA binge in anticipation of this album.
Recently came across the existence of a rare 1999 Loosegroove promo featuring an awesome 4-track radio session at Bob's Garage, and apparently it was once available for download in WAV from Bob's website:
http://forum.rekordsrekords.com/forum/i ... opic=52881
Does anyone happen to have a (lossless) copy of this?
Any links I've found in the interwebs are long since broken
For any appetites I've whetted, here are some passable quality youtube clips of the 4 tracks:
