No, I mean I just saw the GIF Rangi posted. Haven't seen the movie yet.

ah. some people whose taste and politics i despise loved this movie. i'm feeling really compelled to see it, and hate it. but before i do, i'd really like someone's take that i respect, for no other reason than to move me toward a reasonable, objective position from which i can watch the movie.

Yeah, I am very curious about this one. I could see it going either way. I'm feeling optimistic at the moment. Although that baby GIF...Malloy wrote:ah. some people whose taste and politics i despise loved this movie. i'm feeling really compelled to see it, and hate it. but before i do, i'd really like someone's take that i respect, for no other reason than to move me toward a reasonable, objective position from which i can watch the movie.

I felt the scene of George Bush killing like twenty terrorists with his bare hands was a bit overdone.

Re: Movie: American Sniper (01-16-15)
George Bush never comes close to appearing in this movie. I saw it tonight and liked it a lot. I think it is decidedly anti-war, even if Chris Kyle would probably not ever describe himself that way. The movie sees through some of the bullshit that Chris has swallowed. And he hasn't even swallowed it wholeheartedly--he always hates what he is doing.

IMO, this was pro-war, pro-chris kyle. I think it serves that perspective pretty well, and is objective depiction of republican ideology.

Re: Movie: American Sniper (01-16-15)
I see it as an indictment of the recent wars, but not necessarily of the ideology that leads people like Chris Kyle to sign up for war. Chris becomes his perfect self during SEAL training, and then the war breaks him.

I thought him pointing that gun at her was pretty uncomfortable. I know it wasn't loaded and it was him being playful, but I was raised handling guns and the first rule I was taught is that a barrel is never pointed towards a person whether the gun is loaded or not.

yeah, kudos to clint for that scene too.
Anti war? Pro war? I dont think this film tries to answer that.

Re: Movie: American Sniper (01-16-15)
I got the feeling that it was anti-war but pro chris Kyle. Just the effects of it when he came home, losing his friends, being taken aback to his brother saying "fuck this place" when they cross paths, or even the 1000 yard stare on the guy that shoots him show all the negative effects on the individual.VinylGuy wrote:yeah, kudos to clint for that scene too.

so yeah, maybe the movie says war is bad on some level, but the film basically serves as promotional video for the troops. I did find it entertaining though. Held my attention the whole time.

I think that it plays upon the fantasy of being a skilled sniper; reaching that point of zen that you can make any shot to save the day, etc.Dev wrote:so yeah, maybe the movie says war is bad on some level, but the film basically serves as promotional video for the troops. Events unfolded during the development of the movie that really have nothing to do with the movie Bradley Cooper and Clint Eastwood were making....but would be impossible to completely ignore.

They should have shown him going to New Orleans and sniping people after hurricane Katrina

This is pretty mediocre moviemaking.
