GH's article hits the nail on the head. It seems that statistically many more gun owners end up hurting themselves/friends/family members than people who are actually trying to rob or kill them. I grew up around guns but I wouldn't own one now. I don't want a death machine in my house.

Kinda surprised I haven't gotten much pushback on here from posting that article yet. That would be good news of course, as I think it's a point that will be difficult to assail, but I'm willing to hear otherwise.Orpheus wrote:GH's article hits the nail on the head. I read that and I have to ask: what's the proposed solution?
This article is well researched on the statistics of several gun-related incidents, but citing a few tragic stories regarding persons using guns irresponsibly does not solve anything. Am I suppose to believe that the potential actions deterred due to the awareness of the possibility of having a gun pointed at you are irrelevant?
I am not a gun advocate, truthfully. I don't much like guns. I do see a safety net benefit to having a handgun in the house, or a rifle for the use of hunting. Anything more powerful than that makes me uncomfortable, but as long as human beings are spending time and energy on developing new weaponry, little people are going to feel even more threatened.
I want to hear potential solutions. That article offered none.

Almost all laws crafted to forcibly prevent people from owning guns aren't going to do much in this nation. Some of them will violate the Second Amendment, while others that may not won't really be effective in making a difference. Most importantly to this specific angle, most of those laws are going to be politically unpopular to begin with. I think we saw that in the aftermath of the Newtown shooting. Most gun control advocates thought it would finally be a chance to get their agenda moving forward--instead, people became more against gun control, largely due to the "good guy" notion that the article attacked.
As such, I've come to strongly believe that the only way you're going to reduce gun ownership for self defense purposes is to convince people that owning a gun is likelier to make you less safe than more safe. That's what that article is trying to do, and I think it's something gun control advocates should do more of instead of trying to go after legal solutions.

And the other half is correct.Everyone thinks he or she is above average, but half are mistaken.
I've never thought the home invasion scenario was a very good defense of gun ownership, but I have problems with creating laws that punish everyone and curb rights for everyone because a few idiots in our society can't handle the responsibility. The lowest common denominator shouldn't fuck it up for everyone. I think a good idea might be to strictly punish irresponsibility: if your kid steals your gun and shoots up a school, you go to jail for a very long time.

This is the case in California at least. If any minor takes a firearm you own to any public place, you face charges. Its not unreasonable.BurtReynolds wrote: if your kid steals your gun and shoots up a school, you go to jail for a very long time.

Thanks to the ATF , I just bought 3700 rounds of ammunition. Is this all an elaborate stimulus plan?

Grandmother charged in gruesome killing of 7-month-old
A woman accused of beating, choking and cutting the throat of her 7-month-old granddaughter with a power saw Monday has been charged with first-degree murder in the girl's death, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Manuela Rodriguez, 52, is charged with killing Rose Herrera while caring for the girl at her Little Village home, officials said.
According to an autopsy conducted Tuesday, the girl died of cranial cerebral blunt force injuries caused by multiple impacts to the head, the Cook County medical examiner's office said.
A secondary cause of death was determined to be probable suffocation on a sock that was placed in her mouth, according to the office. Her death was ruled a homicide.
Rodriguez is expected to appear in bond court Wednesday.
Police found the child after being called to Rodriguez's building in the 2800 block of South Avers Avenue about 9:40 a.m., according to police and the medical examiner's office.
Authorities allege that Rodriguez used a circular saw to cut the baby's throat, apparently because she wouldn't stop crying. The woman initially tried to shove something -- a sock -- in the baby's mouth to get the girl to quiet down, a source said.
Rodriguez then tried to kill herself and was found by another relative, according to authorities. The woman was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was stable and in police custody.
Illinois Department of Children and Family Services said it was investigating the grandmother in the death of the child.
There was no prior contact with the family, the agency said. No other children were present in the home at the time, officials said.
The girl's father got a call Monday morning at work at a grain elevator in Beecher, according to his friend, Ben Llamas, who works with him.
Llamas said he drove him to the house on Avers. "He was upset," Llamas said, but didn't talk about what happened.
"We just drove in silence," Llamas said. "He was in shock."
A relative said the father's family does not know what happened.
"We have no idea," the relative said Monday, asking not to be named. "We just got the news that she passed away, and that’s all we know. She had no health problems, she was a good baby.
"We don’t know yet, they haven’t said anything," he said.
The relative said the girl would have turned 8 months old Monday.
Brenda Saucedo, 32, who lives on the same block, said she knows Rodriguez.
"She was a nice person, she came to my house," said Saucedo, who is pregnant and came outside with her 4-year-old son Issac. "I'm shocked; she would never do this. It had to be somebody else."
A woman who lives nearby had seen the baby at a health clinic recently. "I held her hand and I was hugging her," said the woman, who asked not be identified. "She had a little flu.
"She wanted to be hugged, she was a happy baby," the woman said. "She was very pretty."
Neighbors said several people live in the home, possibly from one family.
"They were really good people," Francisco Arreola said in Spanish. "I would always see them, and they were very happy. I never heard them fight or anything. They were very good people. It's very difficult, very sad that they killed a child of 8 or 9 months. I heard there was crying."
Marcella Gentil, 28, held her 1-year-old daughter, Tiffany, and said through tears how "sad" it was to hear of the death of an infant.
"It's sad. It's sad, period," Gentil said.
The family at the Avers address were "quiet neighbors," she said. "It's ridiculous, why hurt your child?"
Francisco Arreola, who lives next door, told reporters through a translator that he heard crying upstairs but not much else because he'd been sleeping.
He has known the people who live there more than 20 years, and there is at least a mother, father and two daughters who live there.
"They never had any problems," he said.
Llamas said he and the child's father grew up together in Beecher and went to grade school together, but the father is originally from Chicago.
"His parents know my parents," Llamas said.

On whether guns should be allowed in schools:
"Of course. You think the politicians that run my country and your country don't have guns in the schools their kids go to? They do. And we should be allowed the same rights. Banning guns is like banning forks in an attempt to stop making people fat. Taking away guns, taking away drugs, the booze, it won't rid the world of criminality."

I picked up a new gun yesterday, which was National Gun Violence Day. I didn't plan this when I started the waiting period.

Nothing is going to change. If a classroom full of seven year olds getting massacred the week before Christmas changed nothing then it's just on to the next one.
